Default Get the kids involved!!!!!!

In todays card collecting world we tend to forget the simple pleasure of just getting a pack of cards, so we can get our favorite player or try to get everyone on our favorite team.

At the Cornwell household it seems we get packs or boxes and rip them open to get that relic or auto and the rest of the cards get pushed aside not caring who plays for who or what player we got unless it's a hit!!!!!!!! Well, that's how it was until this holiday season and I got a rude awakening from my 7 year old nephew (My Son's are older and in that same Hit mode that Dad is in, my fault as I gave them this disease) who wanted to know what was wrong with the rest of the cards that we were piling up and pushing aside and it hit me that there was nothing wrong with these cards and those cards were all we had the whole time I was growing up. There was no Game Used or autos unless you took the cards to the Ballpark and got the player to sign it for you (Which makes that card alot more valuble then any pack pulled auto as it gives you that memory you can't buy)

So, My Nephew hit that cord in my memory and I stopped my sons from ripping and with my nephew we looked at every card and we put them in team order and we actually talked about the players and how we had seen Soriano hit a homer for the Cubs and we had seen Verlander pitch a game and the cards became more than just a collection of cardboard, they became a memory and I traveled back to when My son's and I first started opening packs and how my oldest about ten at the time pulled his first hit and all he could say was, " Dad I just got some old guy named Gerrog." and I tried to think who Gerrog was not realizing it was Gehrig and it was funny how uninterested he was in the card and more interested in getting his favorite Cubbies and how I had changed all that in him.
Well, to end this tirade it just goes to show you that it sometimes takes a 7 year old to show you what the Hobby is suppose to really mean.

Yeah that is pretty cool. I remember when it was so much fun and time consuming arranging the cards into teams.

I guess I am fortunate that I stopped collecting for a while and when I got back into it with my sons, I really didn't know of all the "hits". Obviously I can pick out the g/u and autograph cards, but some of the relics and other high number cards I didn't know about. My sons liked the guys are their team, the cool pictures, and the "sparkly" ones.
