To my fellow forum members,
I want to thank everyone for their support and those that read and reply during my P-51 Black Widow build. I not only appreciate this but it keeps my mind sharp, something the therapist and psychologist highly recommends.
I'm a individual that requires everything to be perfect or spot on. Where am I going with this? The Black Widow! I felt that the Widow was way overdone in the weathering department. I got so excited that I just went overboard on this final detail. Here is why, this aircraft made it's debut at almost the end of WWII. The Black Widow did do long range reconnaissance missions with an occasional encounter as the Widow would literally blast a Zero right out of the sky. By 1944, the Japanese Air Command had little or almost no aircraft as well as being low on fuel oh yes, and general day to day of supplies.
The Widow is the very first aircraft to fly with radar, prior to this, all radar equipment were on ground facilities. This is where the weathering comes in. My research tells me that due to the lack of dogfights most weathering were paint chips due to the coral dust that are ubiquitous on the Americans island hopping campaign to build landing fields as close as possible to Honshu, the main Japanese island. These field's were important as a new heavy bomber was created, the B-29 Superfortress. Hence the battle of Okinawa was crucial. It became much easier for the Superfortresses to take the incendiary bombs without running out of fuel straight into Tokyo.
The process was simple, mask the aircraft in it's proper area as needed and respray the P-61 black again. Once this was accomplished, all masking was removed and setting the decals was essential. I originally purchased after market decals. My aircraft originally was named the "The Virgin Widow". With this now covered, I went back and utilized the Revell/Monogram decals that came with the scale model. Now the Widow is called "Times a Waistin". One final part was the front landing gear, it was put on backwards, what do you expect from a Japanese man like me, we start to read from the end of the book. Pages are turned left to right as oppose to right to left and everything used to be written up
down
From
Left to
Right.
Anyway, here is truly the final messing around of the Widow, by the way, I just fixed the front landing gear that was backwards by simply twisting the metal.
The completed Lockheed P-61 Black Widow.
