  • To Authentic or not to Authentic?

    To my fellow forum members,

I find that there is a short lull between products in the early period of the football card collecting season. I've found that this time can be well spent with introspecting as well as retrospecting my collection and more importantly of life. Truly, I love life more than football card collecting, yet I do understand and accept that it is only a small part of my life. At times, the littlest things that are sized 3"x4" can bring a peace of mind and enjoyment to our ever busy and at times complicated lifestyle not to mention all the drama attached to it.

Sports card collecting can take ones life back to our younger days or in our current time, it really is a time machine. You then wonder what was I doing in 1991 when Brett Favre was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons. I can only speak for myself as I had just returned from my life in Europe. My concern was to care for my father and coincidently, of which was not my intention nor my goal was to meet my future wife Mrs. Toshi and to start a family and currently to write this thread some twenty plus years later. Throughout our very fun roller coaster ride in life, we both held on and helped each other to become stronger and mindful in our time together. Successfully raising our children to see them become adults and moving out on their own in their new adventures of their own roller coaster ride in life, Mrs. Toshi and I now know a new phase has begun for the two of us.

While waiting for the next debut of football card products, of which I believe is the debut of 2014 Upper Deck Cards, I have just acquired an estimated twenty plus more cards of 2012 Panini Elite Rookie Hard Hats Acetate Cards. Upon it's arrival, you can bet that I will be showcasing and sharing with forum members of these new cards to my ever growing collection. Once received, I now only need twenty or so 2012 Panini Elite Rookie Hard Hats Cards to complete my set. During this break, I have also taken this opportunity to organized and streamline my football card collection. Adding to this, inputting and taking photos with detailed information of each card onto Sports Card Album is a huge project that will definitely keep me busy up until 2015.

I recently have come across an eBay store of which the seller specializes in sending cards out via USPS to sports athletes requesting their autographs on card. I'm planning on purchasing a Peyton Manning auto. Upon it's arrival, I will then diligently send this card out to PSA/DNA for authentification. If it is deemed authentic, this card will be valued at approximately two and a half times more than my purchase and authentification fees. That's a good thing, if it is a counterfeit, then I'll be at a financial lost of approximately $60.00. Losing money for the validity of a football card is never a positive experience, but being as it may be my first try at this, I really have nothing to loose yet my gains will be substantial if not just having a peace of mind owning a auto of the future Hall of Fame Quarterback Peyton Manning.

My question for today is; "Has anyone ever experienced and or know a fellow collector that has taken on such a project as this"? If the answer is yes, I would like to know if the experience was positive or negative. I also would appreciate any comments in regards to my choosing of this type of collecting.

    Thank you,
    Toshi
I am easy, I collect any and all NFL cards. Individual players I really enjoy are Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Andrew Luck, RGIII, and Russell Wilson. My passion is Favre rookie cards and vintage cards.
