  • Jose Bautista & Troy Tulowitzki To Captain HR Derby Team

Jose Bautista, Troy Tulowitzki named captains for Home Run Derby - ESPN

Troy Tulowitzki just hopes no one will hold any grudges when he picks the National League participants for the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game.

The Colorado Rockies shortstop will serve as captain of the NL side and select the four other members for the derby. Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays is in charge of the American League.

"To be the captain, I don't know if that's something I'm looking forward to because of how tough the decisions are going to be," Tulowitzki said Monday before the Rockies played the St. Louis Cardinals. "You can't put everybody that wants to participate on your team. So with that, you open yourself up.

"But, at the same time, I'm honored to be the National League captain."

The event will be held July 14 at Target Field, the night before the showcase game in Minneapolis.

Bautista is a two-time major league home run champion. Tulowitzki has hit at least 25 homers in three of the past four seasons.

Although the honor was just recently bestowed on Tulowitzki, he's already mulling over his options. Giancarlo Stanton of Miami is high on his list, especially since he leads the league in homers with 20. Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers is also a consideration.

Tulowitzki might even select teammate Justin Morneau, especially since the first baseman came up in the Twins' organization and it would be a homecoming.

"That would be neat for him," said Tulowitzki, who has 18 homers this season. "Obviously, he's a guy I have a relationship with."

Given Tulowitzki's relationship with St. Louis outfielder Matt Holliday, he could be a pick, too. Tulowitzki spent some time catching up with his former teammate before Monday's game.

Did Holliday lobby to be included?

"I don't think so," Tulowitzki said, smiling. "Holliday is just a good friend of mine, someone that I have a great deal of respect for.

"If he wanted to participate, he'd definitely be someone on the list, but he wasn't (lobbying)."

Tulowitzki is hoping players around the NL reach out to him. Rockies pitcher Brett Anderson, who's currently on the disabled list, wrote on his Twitter account: "Fingers crossed Tulo picks me for the home run derby!"

He is listening -- and doesn't want to hear excuses about how the derby might mess up a batter's stroke.

"You take a look during (batting practice), sometimes I'll go out there and try to hit a home run on every single pitch," Tulowitzki said. "It's no different from being in the Home Run Derby.

"Those are my thoughts. I don't really want to entertain that thought, either. You get back on track. And if you're not doing good, you put some (work in the cage). It's not because of a Home Run Derby."

2014 MLB All-Star Game -- Home Run Derby participants announced - ESPN

American League and National League Home Run Derby captains Jose Bautista (Toronto Blue Jays) and Troy Tulowitzki (Colorado Rockies) announced their top three picks for their teams.

Todd Frazier (Cincinnati Reds), Yasiel Puig (Los Angeles Dodgers) and Giancarlo Stanton (Miami Marlins) will represent the National League along with Tulowitzki.

Bautista's squad will include himself as well as reigning derby champ Yoenis Cespedes (Oakland Athletics), Brian Dozier (Minnesota Twins) and Adam Jones (Baltimore Orioles).

An additional fifth member will be named to each team on Thursday.

"Bunch of guys with a lot of power," Tulowitzki said of his team. "More than that, I think they're good guys, got to know them throughout the years."

Stanton is the only player in the National League group that ranks in the top five in the majors in home runs with 21 entering play Tuesday night, but he is the NL-leader in the category.

That means that only one member of the remaining top five home run hitters in the league will be added to Bautista's side. He has a choice of Baltimore's Nelson Cruz (28), the White Sox's Jose Abreu (27) and Detroit's Victor Martinez (21).

Bautista's Toronto teammate Edwin Encarnacion is third in the league with 26 home runs, but is currently on the disabled list. Martinez might also bow out of the running as he's been held out of recent games due to injury.

Fellow Tiger Miguel Cabrera (14) and Los Angeles Angels phenom Mike Trout (20) have already said they will not participate in the contest, which will be held Monday night on ESPN from Minnesota's Target Field.

Stanton, Tulowitzki (18) and Frazier (17) are all in the top five in homers in the National League along with the Cubs' Anthony Rizzo (18) and Philadelphia's Marlon Byrd (18).

Also a possibility for the final NL spot is Tulowitzki's teammate and former Minnesota Twin Justin Morneau. Morneau is a candidate in the Final Vote to make the All-Star team.

"If he wins that final vote, there's possibly a chance," Tulowitzki said. "I think it would make a storyline. Played with the Twins all those years. He's definitely on the list if he makes the team. There are some other guys as well that have lobbied and would be good choices."

Justin Morneau, Josh Donaldson complete Home Run Derby rosters - ESPN

Colorado Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau and Oakland Athletics All-Star third baseman Josh Donaldson have been picked to complete the participants for Monday's Home Run Derby at Target Field in Minneapolis.

Morneau spent 11 seasons in Minnesota with the Twins and won the 2008 derby at old Yankee Stadium. He is hitting .313 with 13 home runs this season.

Donaldson, one of a big league-high six Athletics picked to participate in the All-Star Game, is hitting .241 with 20 homers on the season.

"It's definitely pretty neat," he said. "It will be one of those things that adds icing to the cake. Hopefully I'll be able to put on a show."

The American League derby lineup includes Toronto's Jose Bautista, Oakland's Yoenis Cespedes, Baltimore's Adam Jones and Minnesota's Brian Dozier. Cespedes won last year's event at New York's Citi Field.

The National League lineup includes Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki, Miami's Giancarlo Stanton, the Los Angeles Dodgers' Yasiel Puig and Cincinnati's Todd Frazier.

As captains, Bautista and Tulowitzki chose the other players to represent their respective leagues.
