  • 2014 Bowman Chrome

Here we are my fellow forum members,

Slowly but surely, a little by little, football card products are debuting one after the other. This most recent product was under review by yours truly on Cardboard Connection. Please read the excerpts and review the cards below.

I understand some of the issues collectors have with first of the year products but everyone must understand that these cards are entry level items. 2014 Panini Score and 2014 Topps Bowman Chrome definitely fall into this category among many others not mentioned here.

Personally, in my humble opinion, I don’t take these type of products too seriously! As it is an entry level product, I treat them so.

I normally forgoe the hobby releases and go to a big ticket merchant and purchase blaster boxes of first of the year cards. This concept allows me to have fun, enjoy such an inexpensive product and not worry about it’s book value. Ultimately, placing these cards in an album suffices for my taste.

I’ve only opened a half blaster box yet was pleasantly surprised by how many hits and or inserts were pulled from this break. I’m excited to see what the other half holds.

The base cards are similar with last years design as this presents a; “I’m not too excited about the base cards” syndrome. The colored inserts followed 2013′s product but the difference maker as well as a fresh insert was the 1950 Bowman throwback of Bryn Renner, a relic card of Julio Jones, Colin Kaepernick foil die cut, and a gold foil Jason Verrett numbered to 399 and a orange Jordan Mathews numbered to 299 parallel respectively. As for the blaster box, it was a nice break, decent base cards, great inserts that were the difference maker in this product, and finally the ubiqiutos standard colored parallels.

Will another purchase be necessary? No. I’ll be saving my funds for the National Card Show here at the IX Center in Cleveland, Ohio for day a day pass if my injury does not prevent me from enjoying the show. I am looking forward to my all time favorite go to product of Certified, Elite, Chrome, and Platinum! With a stronger rookie class to look forward to compared to last years 2013 Draft Class disappointment, we as collectors have something to look forward to.

    Toshi

I am easy, I collect any and all NFL cards. Individual players I really enjoy are Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Andrew Luck, RGIII, and Russell Wilson. My passion is Favre rookie cards and vintage cards.

Here's a question...would you consider the veterans and rookies two separate base sets?

Also, why are there black and white bordered base cards? I'm not talking about the black foil...but the normal paper cards...some are black and some are white...but there is no black parallel set listed.

Yes, I definitely would conisder this issue as such. If I'm correct, there is a black border set. The same happened in 2013 Bowman. If you check on Beckett's OPG, there is a black border set.

Great questions, thank you for reading the thread!

So, why would Bowman not note that there was a black and white border set in their sell sheet? They mention that the black border paper card is the parallel of the rainbow foil, but they don't mention anything about the white borders.

I'm just trying to figure out how to collate all this.

Cardboard Connection clearly states that at times, the "Check List" is never 100% correct. From what I can comprehend, changes are made right up to a products debut. This is as much information I have in regards to your Q&A. For much more in depth information, I would log on to the Topps website or Panini's webpage (Directly from the manufacturer) to get as an accurate definition to a specific question.

I truly hope this can assist you in your in hand correlation of your set of cards.

                Thanks!

I have been collecting since 1984 and never run across a set as fragmented as this one. It's so weird.

Anyway, I talked to some guys at my LCS and here's what I gathered:
                • since there are two different cards with the same numbers (i.e., rookie number 1 and vet number 1) and since they have different designs, they are 2 separate sets
                • the base set within each rookie and vet grouping is the paper card
                • there are two sets of paper cards...black border and white border
                • everything else is a subset (parallels, die cut, etc.)
                • it is up to you if you want to call the parallel a subset of the white border or the black border set.

So, here's how I would do it:

Rookie Black Border Set: 1-110 (paper cards)
Rookie White Border Set: 1-110 (paper cards)
Rookie Subsets (parallel, die-cut, relic, auto, etc)

Vet Black Border Set: 1-110 (paper cards)
Vet White Border Set: 1-110 (paper cards)
Vet Subsets (parallel, die-cut, relic, auto, etc)

I would NOT call it a set of 220 and preface the numbers with R and V since R and V do not appear on the card.

                Make sense?
