  • First attempt of Grading

I decided to send in a few cards I thought might be worthy of high grades. I picked SGC because I like the black border they use, I think it looks better than Beckett graded cards. They are a little cheaper to have graded than Beckett but IMO not that much less reputable than Beckett in the secondary market.

    Kinda upset about this grade:

A few got lost in transfer from phone to Photobucket... I'll post them when I'm not so tired.

Thanks! I only got the Hirsch graded cuz I was curious. I knew it wouldn't get a high grade, but I found it at an antique shop for $20. After looking at the scan of the Irvin Contenders Leather I can see why it didn't get such a good grade. Ink on the laces flaked off, spotty ink on the pants... can't wait to send in some more!

I really like how the "Crazy Legs" look! The vintage cards from SGC look the best, they are very cool with the black background. I have never seen modern cards in a SGC grade before. I always thought they did vintage cards. Good job in picking out the right cards to be graded! I especially like the Elway and the Marino. As bcw716 implies; "Good eye". I completely agree. Congratulations! Can you reiterate how and what the procedure is to certify cards through SGC?

        1) Do they require the card to be sent in those large flexible "Funky" top loaders? Or will they allow regular top loaders and or magnetic cases?

        2) How much did it cost including S&H?

        3) How long did it take?

        Thank you in advance.

        Toshi
I am easy, I collect any and all NFL cards. Individual players I really enjoy are Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Andrew Luck, RGIII, and Russell Wilson. My passion is Favre rookie cards and vintage cards.

Thanks bud. I had seen a lot of vintage SGC on eBay also, but I bought a D. Ware Chrome Gold Refractor on eBay that was graded by SGC and when it came I loved the simplicity and black border it had so I decided to try them out. To answer your questions:
          1) They say to send your cards individually in a penny sleeve in a normal top loader so that's how I sent mine. (They don't send them back, though.) Not sure if they accept mag cases. I'm sure they wouldn't turn them away, but to my knowledge they don't grade thick patch cards, so properly protected 35pt top loaders should be safe.. I was worried about this too, btw... extra padding was definitely used on my shipment!

          2) Each card was $7 to be graded. This is the basic grading for normal time. you can spend more to get your cards graded faster. Not sure on the specific amounts. I sent 10 cards. they require declaring value of cards for insurance when they ship them back to you, after shipping and insurance it was $85 total. This included return postage.

          3) I don't remember which option I chose for turn around time, the normal one I think. It took right at a month once they received the cards and me getting them back.

I do wish they would keep you updated on the process of their grading your cards. I didn't get an email until they were shipped back to me saying they were on their way. An email saying they arrived would have been nice and one saying they had reached their turn in line to get graded would be nice also. Just piece of mind that they are going through the process, you know? I was about to send an email asking about them about the status of my cards when I got my email that they were on their way back to me. Now I know about how long it should take...

Here are the other 2 I didn't include in the original post...

Thanks for the 411. The last to cards look as good as the others sent in. Great high grade on them as well.
