Flea Market Finds #70: A Bunch of Binders
I fell off the wagon. I've been sticking to my cardboard budget... or at least keeping things close the entire year. But on Sunday... I succumbed to temptation and went on a little shopping spree. I tried to justify my purchase by telling myself it was an early birthday present. Unfortunately I had bought my early birthday present off of eBay a couple of weeks ago. Simply put... I screwed up
That's what happens when you stumble across a deal at the flea market that's just too good to pass up.
When: Sunday, August 31st
Where: Capitol Flea Market
What: Baseball, Football, and Basketball Cards
How much?: $70
Now before I show off my purchase, I should let you know that I came within a few seconds of walking away without these cards. The vendor had a bunch of toys and I was quickly flipping through his bins. I began to walk away and started talking to me about Hot Wheels and the collection he recently purchased in a storage unit.
After a minute or so of listening to him, I attempted to save both of us time and told him I wasn't really interested. Just as I was about to leave, I mentioned that I was into sports cards. He got excited and pulled out a tub from his truck. There were eight binders filled with everything from baseball to hockey.
And even though most of the stuff was from the 90's... there were actually some decent cards in them. There was one specific binder that caught my eye. Unfortunately, he didn't want to break up the collection. I asked if he'd be willing to meet me half way and sell me four of the binders.
At first he didn't seem like he was willing to budge, but he asked me how much I'd be willing to give him. As soon as he heard my number, he was more than willing to accept. Based on his reaction, I'm pretty sure I could have offered a lot less. Oh well. I think this is one of those rare occasions where we both felt we were getting the better deal.
Below I broke down each binder with a price, but in reality, I paid $70 as a package. But I figured you'd like to see how I came up with the magic number.
Binder #1: 98 Leaf Rookies and Stars Baseball$10
Whoever owned the storage locker had obviously been trying to build a master set of this product. He had almost a complete set, including the SP's... as well as several pages full of parallels and inserts.
Binder #2: 1999 Pacific Prizm and 1999 Topps Chrome Baseball$10
This binder had a lot less inserts and parallels, but it contained a complete Prizmset and some beautiful, shimmering refractors.
Binder #3: 1998 Black Diamond, 1998 Encore, and 1998 Odyssey Football$10
This binder contained three partial sets that I have no intention of completing, but the thing that caught my attention were all of the Peyton Manningrookie cards.
Binder #4: Michael Jordan Collection$40
This binder was loaded with parallels and inserts. A few of them are considered hard to find and sell in the $40 to $80 range. Now normally I wouldn't even consider spending $40 for a basketball card unless it featured an on-card autograph of a hall of famer or current superstar.
But the fact is... this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. This single purchase doubled the size of my Jordancollection.
