  • 2014 Topps Prime

    To my fellow forum members,

I won't go into my usual diatribe. This will be a straight forward personally humble opinion of a review as well as my come to be expected visual "Showcase"!

Upon purchasing the 2014 Topps Prime via Walmart, I hesitated in purchasing not one but to Blaster Boxes. Why was this? In 2012, I bought my very first Prime product of a retail Prime Blaster. To my chagrin, I felt that I've been cheated out when I realized the nature of the beast. These retail cards were much thinner in stock as opposed to the hobby rendition.

I eventually narrowed it down to three products that seemed to cheat out and be cheap as well for collectors far and wide. 2012 Prime, Strata, and Crown Royale, the later being comprised of a totally different product. If it were not for my hit of a base RGIII Prime, at least I considered it a hit due to the fact that it held a high premium as well as my Turbin auto from Strata, I would have been absolutely livid. The only great thing about 2012 Crown would be that after 2 Blaster Boxes, I actually hit a RGIII jersey card. In this fact and this fact alone, the hit was due to Mrs. Toshi choosing the 2nd. 2012 Panini Crown Royale, hence the RGIII hit. BV $40.00.

Now that I've made members of CCW aware of my consternation of 2014 Prime, here is my overview.

    A Pre-Logue:

I decided to purchase 2 Blasters Boxes of 2014 Topps Prime as I was the sole hobbiest shopping at Walmart by myself. Something that has taken me almost three weeks to accomplish after my incident. Mrs. Toshi was racking up an eleven day work week, hence her not being able to take me. Ergo, my solo shopping spree. Upon opening the 1st Blaster Box I noticed a Box Topper. Then the usual 6 packs plus 1 extra bonus pack as advertised. My intuition told me that these packs must be a fifteen card pack as it was so thick. After carefully opening my first pack, lo and behold, these were thick, approximately 75pt. Stock Cards. Wow! For the very first time in my collecting of football cards I've come across a Prime retail that was produced with hobby card stock. I won't ask why. I just fell head over heels and enjoyed the rest of my very surprisingly positively motivating break!

    The break:

As always the nature of my collecting habits, I'm a huge stickler for well produced card stock. My second plus to these cards were the very well known Prime derivative of it being a "Full color bleed" product. All cards were done with quality in mind, so much so that I just texted Brett with my break and to inform him of my choices in this years 2014 product purchases. One of which just might be a 2014 Topps Prime Hobby Box. Per a box break, there was a total of sixteen rookie cards including the Box Topper, six inserts, and one hit.

For a Walmart Blaster Box, this was a magnificent break overall, it was well balanced with a little bit of a variety with the rest of the break comprising of base veteran cards. My moto; "I will only purchase hobby boxes of products that I love with the best quality base cards. This is due to the fact that 85% of your break, whether hobby or retail will comprise of base cards, unless your purchasing a high end item, high ticket product. Will I purchase more of this item? A resounding yes! I actually will be going with Mrs. Toshi to Target and to see if they not only have 2014 Topps Prime but a Target hit centric exclusive. One can only dream and hope for one.

In conclusion, I have only opened one of two 2014 Walmart Prime Blaster Boxes. The other Blaster break will be done by Mrs. Toshi, and so will the Target Blaster if there is so such of one. Enjoy my visual break of box number one. Walmart Box number two and the Target Blaster will follow sometime tomorrow, time and health permitting. Please review and discuss with me on the break as well as any thoughts and or questions regarding this "Football Showcase". Thank you for the read and in advance, thank you for the reply!

    Toshi

I hope you do, please share your card breaks. I'm interested in what you'll pull from this product. By the way, I didn't realize until later, I hit a variation card #35 Dez Bryant. I read the variations would only be for hobby boxes. Here are the two #35's.

I was so blown away with 2014 Topps Prime, I left a glowing review on CBC. Here it is in it's entirety.

All I can say is WOW!!!!!

What a great update from the years past. As always, I so enjoy the full bleed action portraits of my favorite veterans and rookies. It reminds me of the old school Topps Stadium Clubs. Great collation, no doubles. At least not until I realized I had two #35’s, oh my, these were parallels of Dez Bryant. How great is that! 16 rookie cards, 6 inserts, a quad jersey of A.J. McCarron, two Platinum “Blue” Parallels, and a foil enhanced box topper. All this from a “BLASTER BOX” from Walmart!!!

Yes, this is not a misprint, it was from one blaster box. I actually purchased two blasters and I saved the second blaster for Mrs. Toshi to break open. Please note: I’m so excited about this set, I’ll be heading to Target to get blaster box #3. They just might have a Target exclusive hit. If there’s a bunch of rack packs or singles over at Target, I’ll pick up a few of those as well.

Why am I so overly optimistic and positive about 2014 Topps Prime? For the first time ever, all cards and as well as base cards are of the thick card stock that the hobby box edition carries. In the past, the retail version had been printed on thin card stock and a true hobbiest could feel and see the difference in quality of the retail versus hobby products.

Why am I touting the retail blaster so much? For those collectors on a budget as well as those collectors whom just want to sample a new product, this years Prime surely is worth the time and money. Most importantly, it’s the young, up and coming collectors that get to see and hold such a viable product that could just keep these young individuals in this great hobby experience.

Isn’t that what collecting is about? To share the knowledge with the next generation and to keep the fire burning for more cardboard.

        Thank you,

        Toshi

P.S. Please review my breaks in Cardboard Connections (CBC) forum Card Collectors World (CCW) titled under the “Football Showcase” as 2014 Topps Prime.

Nice break toshi, out of low-mid end products this is one of my favorites. Last year I did a bang up job on prime. Hitting a $125 BV giovani bernard lvl 3 relic book (jersey 3 color, wristband, ball) #/15 auto in one box, 2 aaron dobson rookie autos and a ball piece #/10 in another and the last yielded me a eddie lacy rookie auto/ eddie lacy rookie patch, denard robinson quad, and a stedman bailey lvl 5 relic (patch, patch, jersey, patch) auto. It had a major impact on me and I began to enjoy the players on the card rather then a flashy card that catches your eye.

Btw if the McCarron is available please let me know I am starting a pc of him since he is a previous crimson guy.

Nothing exciting in my box. Best card is the "box topper" - De'Anthony Thomas.

Wonder what they will do to make the "hobby" version different. Do like the thicker stock, less likely to have dinged/bent corners.
I collect Andre Johnson, Redskins from the 70’s & 80’s, HOF’ers and Texas A&M Aggies
(Manziel, Mike Evans, Jake Matthews, Ryan Swope, Sean Porter, Luke Joeckel, Damontre Moore, Ryan Tannehill, Cyrus Gray, Jeff Fuller, Martellus Bennett, Stephen McGee, Goodson, Jerrod Johnson, V. Miller, Acie Law, DeAndre Jordan, Antoine Wright, Justin Ruggiano, etc.).

Mrs. Toshi's 2014 Topps Prime Break

Mrs. Toshi picked out 2 blasters, 1 rack pack, and 2 singles. She still has the Queen Midas touch. Now can she pull off more hits from other products? What I find interesting is that from the blaster from Target, she was able to pull a Level V. Please review her break below.

Yes, I do recall some of your breaks of 2013 Prime. It is a very good product, again, I can't say how many times I've touted the excellent photos and superb card stock. As for the McCarron, I'll hang on to it for now. When I get my share of it, I'll keep you in mind as for trading the McCarron. Thank you for the read and the reply, especially the interests. I love it when there are other hobbiest that share the same passion of a specific product! Enjoy your NFL Sunday Football!

Another very nice hit. Wish that were my box. I think I need Mrs. Toshi to select my blasters.

I think I might have the Cordarrelle Patterson variation. It was upside down in the pack. Doesn't match photos on Ebay.

Well it's better than a Michael Sam box topper in a Rams uni. He's now on the Cowboys practice squad. I didn't care for that box topper. Oh well.

I think there will be more of an oppurtunity to aquire and hit the Level I, II, III, IV, and V hits. Although I'm shocked by how Mrs. Toshi was able to mentally see a hit in this break with the Carey of which was a Level V. I thought that these Level series were strictly hobby only?

I must agree with you that, due to the excellent and robusts card stock, damage will be kept to a minimum as you so suggest.

Brett is extremely blown away that Mrs. Toshi was able to pick and pull a Level V Ka'Deem Carey quad jersey auto. I'll loan you Mrs. Toshi's woman's intuition in picking a box with a hit for you, for a small fee. LOL!!!

Then it has to be a variation of Patterson. Congratulations on that variation!

Got a box of Prime today from Target this time. No hit. At least my "box topper" was Manziel (PC).

Superman would always get hits in new product blasters. He lives in Cincy. Like I told him a couple of years ago when he was nailing it, it seems like all the hits (good) are in the boxes in the northern/middle states. By the time boxes arrive here there aren't any left. I know that isn't true (I hope), but it just seems that way.

Still, I think and feel that that is a very nice box topper you pulled with the Manziel. Are you leaving it in the cellophane wrap unopened? I have been doing so. I have three Prestige and three Prime box toppers unopened and each placed in an individual team bag. The Prestige box toppers are a little larger in length hence, I placed those in graded card sleeves.

I then placed all six box toppers in a eTopps ziplock bag. It seems to do the trick. What are your thoughts on preserving the box toppers? Sealed, unopened or opened? If open, how are you storing them, especially the Prestige box toppers? LMK.
