  • Vintage Eye Candy

I've been in love with the 1975 Topps Minis since I was a kid. I remember hearing that they were a test issue and much more scarce than the regular 75's... which only increased the infatuation. The only problem is when I was ten years old, I didn't have the willpower to save up and buy a complete set.

Plus in the 80's, I more interested in new releases instead of vintage. As time went on... the set continued to get more expensive... thus making it less likely that I'd ever reach my dream of owning the 660 card set.

Fast forward three decades and I'm finally in the position where I can pick up something special for myself every now and then. So when I stumbled across this near mint condition set on eBay, it was love a first sight. I knew I had to own it, so I made the seller a fair offer and thankfully he accepted.

Upon its arrival, I quickly discovered that this set had a few flaws. Twelve to be exact. There were two cards missing: #166 Woodie Fryman and #344 Ben Oglivie. And ten of the team checklists had be marked in pencil.

The seller ended up giving me a partial refund to help cover the cost of replacing the cards. I immediately picked up the two missing singles, but I'm still in the process of acquiring the team checklists.

In the meantime... I've thrown the set into Ultra Pro'snew 9-pocket mini card pages and have to admit... the set looks awesome. See for yourself:

It looks so good that the pencil marks are hardly noticeable. I've only had this set in the binder since last weekend and I've already looked through it ten to fifteen times. And guess what? I'm so enamored by the bright colors, numerous superstars, and awesome card design... I haven't once flipped over the checklists in search of pencil.

Right now... it's about appreciating what I have in front of me. And I'm perfectly happy with what I see.

    Happy Wednesday everyone... and sayonara!

Nice set. Kind of hard to display the Brett since it's cased, what about Yount - is it raw? Where did you find the mini pages, I've been waiting & hoping they'd finally come out with some but have yet to see them for sale with the outlets I buy from.

Yeah... the Yount is raw. I'm debating on busting the Brett out of the holder, because there isn't a good way to keep it with the binder.

As for the pages, my wholesaler had boxes of them. If your LCS doesn't have them and you don't have access to a wholeseller, you can buy them on eBay:

Crack the case and put Brett in his rightful place among the rest of the set. I have the same issue with a '99 SP Signature set I'm trying to display, needed Frank Thomas & Ken Griffey Jr. autos to complete the set and could only find Jr. graded while the others are in screw downs, once I figure out how to mount them that Griffey is coming out.

Thanks for the ebay link, his collectible prices are fairly decent but the supplies are out there. Not sure why BO, D&A or any of the larger sites haven't offered mini-pages, no luck with the two LCS's in my area so I'll just be patient until they become more commonplace.

I appreciate your quest for this vintage set! I once had a Brett from the regular set - it had teeth marks in it - which I guess is better than what happens on a bike spoke with a clothes pin - but anyway after moving it and the others in the shoe box from appartment to apartment in college I sold them...

I now have my collection in binders and routinely bust out eTopps and the like in order to get them in the binder with their kin...

I have only ever had 2 encased refractors from sets and they are still in the slabs because that's how they were "issued"...

Oddball pages are hard to come by in general - you may try a scrap booking store or a craft store that sells various photo pages...I have used them for odd sizes and they are generally affordable and acid and pvc free...

            Happy New Years guys!

I'm probably going to look for a Brett at some upcoming card shows. If I can find an affordable copy, I'll buy it and the next time I'm visiting my parents I'll slide it into the binder.

I'm a huge fan of the 99 SP Signature set. There's just something special about those 90's on-card autographs. Once upon a time I considered building that set, but my budget just doesn't make it a possible. Maybe when I hit the lottery.

My goal is to one day have all of the Topps baseball sets from 1972 to 1985. I'm more than halfway there... but still far enough away to keep it challenging. I have no problems busting cards out of their holders depending on the grade. I'll see how things work out and decide later on down the road whether or not I'll free my Brett from his holder.

I remember reading about this set back in the 90's in an issue of Tuff Stuff.
              Very cool set.

I didn't realize how pricey these had gotten over the years.....

Wow. That sure is a nice set... but a lot of money. I'm sure it cost the guy a lot of money to have all of those cards graded. Can't imagine how much room that takes up too. I'll stick with my ungraded set in a binder

By the way... loved Tuff Stuff back in the day. Great magazine.

Ahh, I never even factored the price of grading either.
