  • Topps? Quality Control?

    To my fellow forum members,

I think this is the first ever complaint that I've issued on "Football Showcase"! Here's what happened today.

Having several days of sub-zero temperatures, Mrs. Toshi and I finally went out to get groceries in preparations of a stuffed cabbage dinner. Although snowing, the temperature was a balmy 28 degrees, anything is better than -25. As a matter of fact, we go to Walmart as it's a 3 minute drive from our condo. While there, I decided to grab a hanger pack of Topps Chrome just because. It's the pack with 3 chrome packs and 3 orange retail exclusive cards.

Mrs. Toshi and I could not believe our eyes! Upon opening the hanger pack, we were pulling regular Topps cards out of the Chrome hanger pack. My 3 orange retail exclusive cards were just plain Chrome cards. What is going on at Topps quality control? As RBRedskins pointed out in another thread, I think it's time Topps steps aside.

Everything from RC symbols on veteran cards, to packaging the incorrect cards in the hanger packs, I think Topps is really going down hill. Think about this forum members, Topps Chrome is the most visibly renown product from Topps, and to make such a mistake as this is uncalled for. You would think that their flagship product would be better organized. My main issue is that a budding young collector finding these types of issues would not sit well for young entry level collectors, how would you feel if your son/daughter ripped open a pack to find something like this. Wrong cards, completely wrong product.

With this being said, I'm actually hoping as well as looking forward to Paninis exclusive NFL rights to produce football cards. You would consider in that Topps, knowing this being the last year of football card production, would go out with a bang impressing collectors. Not depressing collectors expectations.

    Toshi

That is nuts. Was there any evidence of tampering/repackaging? Wonder if someone bought both Topps and Topps Chrome, kept the Topps Chrome cards and returned the Topps in the guise of Topps Chrome packaging. Seems ridiculous, but you never know what some idiots will do to beat the system.
I collect Andre Johnson, Redskins from the 70’s & 80’s, HOF’ers and Texas A&M Aggies
(Manziel, Mike Evans, Jake Matthews, Ryan Swope, Sean Porter, Luke Joeckel, Damontre Moore, Ryan Tannehill, Cyrus Gray, Jeff Fuller, Martellus Bennett, Stephen McGee, Goodson, Jerrod Johnson, V. Miller, Acie Law, DeAndre Jordan, Antoine Wright, Justin Ruggiano, etc.).

There was no visible tampering done with my hanger pack. I had Mrs. Toshi look over the packing twice just to make sure. It seems that Topps has made a huge packaging ERROR!

For all that Topps does wrong, I think this was repackaged, the odds of something like this happening with chrome are pretty slim I think considering the nature of the mispack. I'd return this to the retailer, and tell them to keep a better eye on the card aisle. Sorry to see this happen to you, I had a repack issue with a blaster of Gypsy Queen, and at first glance I didn't notice anything off with the shrink wrap. I wouldn't be surprised if someone found a way to reseal this stuff. I've bought well over a metric ton of various Chrome rack packs and never seen a miscue like this. Not that it couldn't happen, it's just a lot more likely that a pack searcher or someone like that opened and repackaged this.

On another note, not to be argumentative at all, I like most of your posts, but if my son opened this up, and received this mess, I'd be more upset than he would. My son is ten, and is more than happy just to pull players he likes, or Carolina Panthers. He bought a hanger box of base Topps Football and pulled a Pink Bordered Blake Bortles RC as well as a Teddy Bridgewater Relic and while he thought those were awesome (after I explained how incredibly awesome those pulls were) he still required me to sleeve and topload a good number of base cards that I personally wouldn't bother with, lol. Point I'm making is that this hobby, for the most part, is an adult hobby that requires adult money. It's not marketed much toward people that don't have a bank account and a driver's license.

Mrs. Toshi and I will go back to Walmart and see if the rest of the rack packs have been so called re-packaged. I will update everyone with our research. This is a mystery to be solved. Thank you for reading and replying on this thread.

As a child, I recalled buying packs of football cards to chew gum and to utilize the cards for my bicycle spokes. We did also trade cards as well. I can understand that hobby boxes are more of an adult orientated product, I do still find single packs at Target for $2.00 or so. If what you state is correct, that's too bad that card companies are not attempting to create a market for young collectors. These young collectors are the future hobby box purchasers.

Your statements are not argumentive at all, I always welcome a different perspective into the world of sports cards or anything else for that matter. That's what makes these threads so interesting. Thank you for reading and replying on this thread!

                To my fellow forum members,

Mrs. Toshi and I went back to Walmart today and found that there were 10 other hanger packs that were incorrectly FACTORY packed. Each did not carry any Retail Exclusive orange cards nor were there any Chrome cards packed as well. These hanger packs were pulled from retail sales the moment we pointed out the error. I find it hard to believe that a collector would subject himself/herself to misappropriating and contaminated these dozen packs or so and resealed each one.

I have sent an email to Topps, in regards to this issue. I can only imagine the reply being; "Oh, well". So, the mystery has been solved and once again; "Shame on Topps"!

Wow, that's pretty horrible on Topps part, I'll be sure to watch the rack packs I buy, as I typically buy these every chance I get, I typically fare well with color and autos from these so I prefer them.

In regard to a 'collector' doing something like that, you're right, a collector wouldn't, but a pack searcher sure would, I consider them to be different from a collector. As bad as this mistake was on Topps part, I'm relieved honestly to know that it was a factory error as opposed to someone actively doing shady stuff in your neck of the woods. I don't have a hobby shop anywhere near me so I depend on retail outlets for my wax fixes and I wouldn't want to have someone or someones tampering with product. Thanks for the update, sorry for your loss here, looks like you did well with Fire though.
