  • Wide Receiver Memories Project

Backstory: Thanks to my sons I got back into the card collecting hobby in December of 2013. We have had a great time figuring out their likes and building their collections. We've bought a few boxes, made some trades, ebay shopped, and attended 2 card shows. All of this has been about them and their collections. Recently I have had a desire to rediscover my own desires and build a collection of my own.

Growing up I quickly became a fan of the 49ers and specifically Joe Montana. During the 80's they had many battles with some great teams. I was always drawn to wide receivers on those other teams. This collection I am starting is dedicated to those receivers of the 80's, many of whom I think are underrated or underappreciated.

    Here we go!

Drafted #37 overall in 1981, 8 Seasons, 2 Super Bowl appearancs, 3 Pro Bowls, 2nd Team All Pro 3 times, 1st Team All Pro (1983), 417 receptions, 6,698 yards, 36 touchdowns...

Anthony Cris Collinsworth - I love the action photo on this card showing the anticipation of the ball arriving. Perfect shot for a wide receiver!

Drafted #34 overall in 1986, 10 Seasons, 2 Pro Bowls, All Pro (1990), 571 receptions, 8215 yards, 49 touchdowns receptions. Might be most known for his signature TD celebration known as the Electric Slide

Ernest Pastell Givins Jr. - I like the fact that this is basically one of the cards I grew up with. The Oilers were pretty good at slingin' the ball around back in those days!

Really like John Taylors auto. I have the 2006 Legends auto, and it is similar with the top of the "h" cut off. But still nice and clean with some style. One of the 1% (being conservative) that you can read.
I collect Andre Johnson, Redskins from the 70’s & 80’s, HOF’ers and Texas A&M Aggies
(Manziel, Mike Evans, Jake Matthews, Ryan Swope, Sean Porter, Luke Joeckel, Damontre Moore, Ryan Tannehill, Cyrus Gray, Jeff Fuller, Martellus Bennett, Stephen McGee, Goodson, Jerrod Johnson, V. Miller, Acie Law, DeAndre Jordan, Antoine Wright, Justin Ruggiano, etc.).

I agree with you, it's a nice legible auto with decent size to it. I'm really trying to find a nice clean signature of these guys. The Givins isn't my favorite since it's hard to see the autograph but I remember pulling that card from packs back in the day.

In defense of the other 99%, it's really hard to fit two initals in a space that small!

Back again with another installment of the WR Memories Project. This one is at the top of the list but just arrived...quite unexpectedly I might add!

Drafted #117 overall in 1976 by the Houston Oilers, 13 Seasons, 7 Pro Bowls, 5x All Pro, 819 receptions, 13,098 yards, 100 touchdowns receptions, member of 1980's All Decade Team.

After four preseason games, he was slated to be cut, but was instead traded for a 1977 eighth-round pick. While not particularly fast, he was extremely sure-handed. He was selected to the NFL Pro Bowl seven times, and was the first member of his team to earn that honor. In 1982 he, and a teammate, ended his participation in the NFL strike, after the third and final week of the strike, citing religious principles, specifically based on Matthew 5:36–37, stating that "your word is your bond" and that all contracts shall be honored as with God.

At the time of retirement, he held all major NFL receiving records, including: most receptions in a career, most receiving yards in a career, and most touchdown receptions (100). He was also in possession of a then-record streak of 177 consecutive regular-season games with a reception. He also holds the distinction as the first receiver in NFL history to achieve 100 touchdown receptions in his career.

Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995...

Can't even call this a trade Rob. I tried to get that Five Star Largent and a Five Star Steve Young from a guy on SCF. He said they were his favorite players and I didn't have anything he liked better. Two days later I get a PM from him saying how great it is that the kids are into collecting and that we do it as a family. He offers me the Inkredible and a bunch of Seahawk cards for a Steelers auto that I had. In the mail today shows up these two cards, a huge stack of colored parallel Seahawks, 3 OBJ inserts and a stack of chrome minis.

Unbelievable blessed by him and many others on this site and SCF who have done similiar things for the boys. There really aren't even words. Definitely appreciate you all and this community...we have some big shoes to fill (pay) forward!
