  • Jake Arrieta Throws No Hitter Against Reds

Jake Arrieta no-hits Reds in blowout win for the Chicago Cubs - Chicago Cubs Blog- ESPN

CINCINNATI -- He'll probably say he didn't have his best stuff but these days Chicago Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta doesn't have to be his best to get results. He's that good. And he proved it once again by no-hitting the Cincinnati Reds in a 16-0 win on a cool Thursday evening at Great American Ballpark. It was his second no-hitter since last August when he did the same to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Arrieta walked four and struck out six, as the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner got better and more efficient as the game went along. It took him 85 pitches to get through the first six innings but only nine to get through the seventh and nine more to get through the eighth, putting his pitch count at only 103 before taking the mound in the ninth.

In looking back, no one came very close to getting a hit for the Reds. There were no diving plays in the outfield or the need for incredible range in the infield. Brandon Phillips came the closest -- grounding a ball to third baseman Kris Bryant in the fourth inning as Bryant bounced the throw to first but Anthony Rizzo made the scoop. It could have gone as an infield hit if Phillips had made it safely. But he didn't and Arrieta made history once again.
