  • Manny Machado Hits 3 HRs In First 3 Innings

Baltimore Orioles' Manny Machado hits 3 HRs in 3 innings vs. Chicago White Sox

CHICAGO -- Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado became the second player in major league history to homer in the first, second and third innings of a game, driving in a career-high seven runs in a 10-2 rout of the Chicago White Sox on Sunday..

Machado hit a two-run homer in the first and a three-run shot in the second off Chicago White Sox right-hander James Shields, who allowed four home runs in 1 1/3 innings Sunday. Machado connected again for a two-run homer off reliever Matt Albers in the third as the Orioles built a 10-0 lead.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the only other player to hit three homers in the first three innings of a game was Carl Reynolds on July 2, 1930 -- for the White Sox.

All three homers by Machado were pulled to left field and gave the All-Star 25 on the season.

"It's pretty awesome,'' Machado said. ``I'm not going to lie.''

The Orioles have hit a major league-best 168 homers this season.

Machado is the first Baltimore player to hit three homers in a game since Chris Davis -- who also homered in Sunday's game -- did so on May 20, 2014, against Pittsburgh. He's ninth player in big league history to homer in any three consecutive innings.

Machado went hitless his final three at-bats of the game. He grounded into a double play in the fifth inning, lined out to center field in the seventh inning, and grounded out to third base in the ninth inning.

"I was trying real hard,'' he said.

Most of the damage came against Shields, who had improved after a rough start with the White Sox following a June trade with San Diego. He was charged with eight runs and six hits with two walks and two hit batters, marking the sixth start the right-hander has allowed at least six runs.

"I was pretty much bad all around,'' Shields said. "I wasn't hitting my spots. I was leaving the ball over the plate, and they were capitalizing on it. You can't do that against this team.''

Machado also had some kind words for Alex Rodriguez, his close friend and offseason workout buddy who announced that he will playing his last game for the New York Yankees on Friday.

"I've known him for a long time. To see him go up there and talk and leave it there, it's tough. It's a tough situation. I know as a personal friend he sleeps, breathes, eats baseball,'' Machado said of Rodriguez.
