Cleveland Indians reach deal with Austin Jackson

The Cleveland Indians agreed to a minor league contract with outfielder Austin Jackson on Wednesday.

Jackson, who will turn 30 on Feb. 1, signed with the Chicago White Sox following the 2015 season but only played 2 1/2 months for them after undergoing season-ending surgery on his left knee in June. He batted .254 with 18 RBIs and two stolen bases in 54 games before getting hurt.

Jackson played for the Seattle Mariners and the Chicago Cubs in 2015, batting .267 with nine homers and 48 RBIs in 136 games. He played for the Tigers for four-plus seasons before he was traded to Seattle in a multiteam 2014 deadline deal that moved ace David Price from Tampa Bay to Detroit.

The right-handed hitting Jackson has played mostly center field during his six seasons in the majors. He is a .272 hitter with 55 homers, 314 RBIs and 108 steals in 914 career games.

Jackson gives the Indians some outfield depth and insurance in case left fielder Michael Brantley isn't ready for the start of the season. Brantley played in just 11 games last season following surgery on his right shoulder.
