Help with making banners please

I've got GIMP but I'm having some serious problems figuring it out

If someone would show me how to use it, It would be greatly appreciated!

I use Photoshop CS2....I've tried all the newer versions and hate them.

And no, didn't buy it. Stole it from my mom's old work.

I gave it back.....after I downloaded it onto my computer.

No I've tried those tutorials and because I'm a graphic designer newb, I don't understand it

I also have no clue how to use gimp... I can get the banner to be the right size, and I know how to do a 1 color background, but no idea how to add a pic or anything like that.
