  • Topps Diamond Giveaway Offers Prizes

Topps launched its 60th Anniversary Diamond Giveaway website on Tuesday, offering free cards from past years, trading and an interactive online game that allows collectors to win other prizes in conjunction with the 2011 Topps baseball card base set.

The promotion comes on the heels of the 2010 Topps Million Card Giveaway, which offered many of the same elements, including the opportunity to make virtual trades with other collectors.

Diamond Giveaway Code cards are inserted 1:6 packs of Topps Baseball Series 1 and will also be in Series 2.

Consumers enter the codes printed on the backs of the cards on the special website to unlock their free card and participate in the game.

Prizes include a 1-1 parallel of every 2011 Topps Series I base card with an actual diamond embedded into each card.

    Other prizes include:

Diamond Die-Cut cards:* Each of these cards features a current or legendary star on a hologram graphic design enhanced by a die-cut emulating a diamond.

Black Diamond Die-Cut cards:* The same cards as above with a die-cut replicating a rare black diamond and numbered to 60.

Topps original baseball cards:* Authentic original cards from 1952-2009.

The latter prize will be the most common and the majority of cards pulled are of the modern variety.* However, last fall, a California collector pulled a card that revealed a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle (PSA 6) worth thousands of dollars.

Once a card is unlocked, you can offer it up for trade to other collectors in the Diamond Giveaway community. *Trading will begin April 1st.

After April 1 you can request your Topps Diamond Giveaway cards be shipped to you by USPS or UPS.

Unlocking a card will also give collectors *a chance to “dig” for more prizes in the Diamond Dig. *A baseball diamond appears online with 250 plots in which to dig. Each code unlocked will allow selection of a new place to dig. Each plot has a prize buried in it, prizes include Topps 60th Anniversary Card sets, a diamond engagement ring, a Topps 60th anniversary ring and the more common “virtual rings”, which can be accumulated to trade for more prizes which get better the more codes you unlock

According to Topps, there are three different types of virtual rings in the promotion: 30 rings representing each of the current MLB teams,15 rings representing “legacy teams” and 15 player rings. You can collect the rings for more prizes and trade them with others.

The Diamond Giveaway code cards have become a sort of baseball card lottery ticket and are a commodity offered as lots on eBay.

The codes expire January 31, 2012.
