  • 2011 Topps Opening Day Offers Low Cost Alternative

Tucked in alongside the release of its popular Heritage product, 2011 Topps Opening Day baseball hit store shelves late last week.

The brand is again geared toward the budget-minded collector who would rather not chase down a 660-card set spread over two series.* Opening Day offers a tight 220-card base set with only the best players from each team, a total of 13 rookies and no foil printing as we see in the annual Topps base brand. * The Opening Day logo adorns each card.

Priced at $9.99 for retail blaster boxes of 11 seven-card packs or $30-35 for a 36-count hobby box, Opening Day has seven insert sets, some of which are clearly geared toward young people who may be collecting for the first time including:

SUPERSTAR CELEBRATIONS: 25 cards capturing notable home plate or dugout player celebrations.
    - MASCOTS: "Lucky Charms" from 25 Major League teams.
    - TOPPSTOWN.COM STARS: 25 playable Topps Attax cards in a shiny version featuring a 2011 Opening Day logo.
    - SPOT THE ERROR: These cards present 2 card fronts. Compare the fronts of each card and look for the very subtle differences.

UNDER THE LIGHTS: Glow-in-the-dark cards, featuring night game photography, showcase shimmering lights and key game elements.
    - OPENING DAY STARS: Popular 3D cards showing the biggest stars.
    - PRESIDENTIAL FIRST PITCHES: Presidential first pitches from throughout baseball history.

There is a parallel version of the base set, featuring light blue borders and numbered to 2011 each.
