    1971 Play Ball Children's Book

Last Sunday, I was close to walking out of the flea market without buying any sports memorabilia. But what's that saying? Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

With two rows left, I stumbled across this children's instruction book written by Boston Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski. The book contains a little bit of everything:

Hitting, Running, Fielding, and Pitching Tips

    Personal Highlights

Any Sox fans know what game he's talking about? Prior to 1971,Yaz belted a home run in the bottom of the ninth only twice:

June 30th, 1964 - He hit a solo home run with one out off of Kansas City Athletics' pitcher Wes Stock.

May 18th, 1969 - He hit a grand slam off of Mike Marshall who was pitching for the Seattle Pilots.

Unfortunately, the Red Sox lost both of these games.

    & Motivating Final Thoughs

The vendor was asking for two bucks, so I countered with a dollar and he accepted. This might not be the most expensive piece of memorabilia in my collection, but it's the best $1 lesson I've had in a long time.

If you're interested in other sports titles from the Grow Ahead Books series: 18 Holes by Jack Nicklaus, Your Serve by Arthur Ashe, and Jump Ball by Oscar Robertson.

    Happy Friday and sayonara!
