Feller spent his entire 18 year career with the Cleveland Indians and during that time he won 266 games and struck out 2,581 batters. He was an eight timeAmerican Leagueall-star and was the 1940 Major League Player of the Year.
It's very likely that he would have been a member of the 300 win/3000K club , but he missed 3.5 seasons during his prime years, because he volunteered to serve his country in its time of need.
After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941... Feller immediately joined the United States Navy. He became the first professional athlete to enlist. While stationed on the USS Alabama, he served as a gun captain for 34 months.
During that time, the USS Alabama won eight battle stars (nine overall), including one at the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.
Okay... now that you've read a brief biography of Mr. Feller, I've got to ask you.
Isn't it crazy that you can pick up an on-card autograph of this World War II veteran and MLB HOFer for under $10?
Yes... I know he's one of the most prevalent signers in the history of professional sports. But for the price of a discounted blaster box at Target, does it really matter?
In fact, if you're patient... you can find it for closer to $5. I grabbed mine a few weeks ago for $6.99 (free shipping).
Did I really need another Fellerautograph in my collection? Probably not. I own at least two other autographed cards, four or five 8x10 photos, and a signed baseball. But if people are going to sell them for $7 shipped... I'M BUYING!
