  • Product Recommendations / Help Me!

Heya Baseball Showcase! I have recently rejoined the hobby after a year long break, before which I was mainly focused on football products. Well, I'm back, and I want baseball! The problem is, I haven't collected baseball cards in so long that I don't know what products are worthwhile any longer!

This is where you fine people come in!

I need help finding products that may be worth my time to purchase! I have bought a BUNCH of 2015 Bowman retail (and actually had pretty decent luck... 4 autos between 5 blasters and 4 hanger boxes, including an Alex Reyes green chrome /99 and a bunch of colored parallels), and I dig the look, though I am not a "prospector". The "flagship" Topps line bores me... I hate manufactured relics (2014 Rookie Class Ring set anyone?)... Refractors and colored parallels are fine for the most part... I like to be able to complete sets (whether it be base, chrome, insert... I want to be able to complete a set through breaking packs)... I like having team names (there is a difference between a card saying "Twins" instead of "Minnesota"!), but if the checklist / hits are worth it, it isn't a deal breaker...

Here is the kicker... I don't have a ton of cash to spend (my son and two step sons / bonus sons are coming for the summer, and I need to buy my wife a diamond!)... I am going to have to flip / sell hits that aren't PC to buy boxes in many cases, which is why I need to be able to maximize hits per dollar and possible PC hits (Minnesota Twins).

With all that said... does anyone have any recommendations for a worthwhile product? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well, if you have to flip, stay away from Panini, horrid resale value. Building a set? Any of the Minor League products from Topps are good, as they tend to have smaller sets (200 cards). I would caution you against trying to build sets from Retail packs, the collation is pretty lopsided, you won't complete a set without spending a TON of cash. Allen and Ginter might be the easiest base set to build from retail, but again, you will spend a ton of cash still.

Now if you're going the hobby route...

Heritage High Numbers (they are going back to a pack format for this year) may be the very best thing you can go after this year. The boxes should be around $65, and a smaller set than regular Heritage should mean two, maybe three boxes will get you a base set. Also, there will be Kris Bryant RCs, plus traded players in their new unis, might be one of the better products this year honestly.

Oh, and Heritage products tend to sell well if you're flipping. The parallels, autos, and SPs, hell I did pretty well this year buying retail Heritage.

Thanks for the product recommendations! I'm only buying Bowman retail because I have no LCS, so Walmart it is... haha!

I did get a strange blaster today though... It had an orange Jason Wheeler auto #ed to 25 in it, so that was cool, but another pack was weird. It had 3 chrome prospects in it, and then 5 orange wave chrome refractors in it, one of which was a Kris Bryant... Can't find the odds on the orange wave cards, but to get 5 in one pack? Hot pack anyone!?

Thanks again for your help revghost!

Great break there, you're welcome anytime for info bud. Way to go on the Bryant! The wave packs are about one every four or five blasters for me. Bryant is the best out of those, should sell well!

Hey Brad. This may help you. Click on the set checklist tab at the link below. Looks like the Chrome Orange Wave Refractors are retail only.
