Hey guys,
I'm fairly new back to collecting since I was a kid after a 15 year hiatus. I live in Chicago and am a huge Cubs fan. As such, I have been chasing low-numbered Kris Bryant cards. Getting back into collecting, I've also familiarized myself with both the PSA and BGS population reports. I can't remember which card it is, but I noticed on one of Bryant's orange refractors (#/25), there are 25 graded BGS examples. I found this odd as I wondered, "What is the likelihood that all 25 examples were sent in for grading and all of them found their way to BGS?" Not very likely.
So then I wondered, "Are there any cards where there are more graded examples than cards in existence?" Well, I decided to look into Kyle Schwarber as I think the possible National League DH rule change could do wonders for him and the Cubs. Anyway, I saw a 2014 Bowman Chrome Draft Red Refractor Autograph on eBay (#/5). However, looking the BGS population report, there are SIX graded examples.
This leads me to think that one of the cards (probably the only example graded a 9) was cracked out of the slab and sent in for regrading. Do BGS and PSA not keep track of these individual numbers in their databases for their reference just in case this happens? It would seem to me that it would be simple enough...and then they would have a history of how that exact card graded before. And then if the grade is bumped up, it could just be replaced rather than creating a seemingly unrealistic scenario of more grades than cards.
Has anyone else seen this? I attached a screenshot of said card.
