  • Topps Five Star Football Out Today

Most of the talk may have shifted to the 2011 baseball season, but Topps is hoping to put the wraps on football with its release of one of the most talked about products in a long time.

Five Star Football is sort of a Rolls Royce type card issue, focused almost exclusively on autographs.* The product is being officially released today, but dozens of cards had already made their way to eBay by Tuesday.

Each card created for the set was limited to 150 or less.* Each five-card tin includes four autographs and one jersey relic or patch card.* That’s the good news.* The other side of the coin is… well… the coin.* $400 per pack is SRP.

Topps calls Five Star the “most ambitious high-end product we’ve ever created”.* Topps’ design team reportedly worked long and hard to try and ensure the product was worth the price tag for collectors seeking value for that large chunk of cash.

Autographs are all on card, which is making collectors happy.* There were several glowing reviews from those who had compared it to Upper Deck’s popular high-end Exquisite line from years gone by.

Not everyone was pleased with what was popping out of those unopened boxes, however.* C.J. Spiller seemed to be everywhere as did a few other lesser-known rookies.

At a dealer cost of about $330 per, it’s a big commitment for hobby shops as well as those who buy them.

Some big pulls have already been recorded including a Sam Bradford-Jahvid Best (3/5) dual autograph patch card and one with Joe Namath and Bradford.

Topps said Tuesday it was creating a “bounty card” contest for the product.* Collectors who pull the specific card and submit photographic proof will win a prize.

Here’s a link to the cards on eBay right now.
