When I first joined this forum, I thought it was a place where one can share their cards and talk about the collecting experiences. This fact is just a small integral part of this forum. I had no idea that cards were traded between members. Lets go back in time, from what I've researched, the first cards were baseball cards inserted into packs of cigarette's. Hence T-206 was born. In our modern age of a healthy lifestyle, that would be a cardinal sin. Selling tobacco products in conjunction with sports cards. Hence the collecting of sports cards were introduced. From the infamous "Cut Plug Mayo Series", to the 1948 Leaf and Bowman products, and finally our modern age of technology offering everything from game used items, autographs, holofoil, and lets not forget cards that have actual mini video screens, playing excerpts of highlights of the players depicted.
In going forward with this forum, I completely forgot that during my youth, cards were sold with bubble gum. These collectibles called sports "TRADING" cards were all the rage and now has become a multi billion dollar industry. But the term "trading cards" was lost in all of this. Here I am on this new forum of which I've never been a part of in my life, forgetting that the cards that I so cherished were and are actually traded between two individuals. Understanding that trust and honor are some of the traits that are depended on during these transactions.
In all honesty, I've actually never traded cards before. I was shocked when this opportunity came forth! I had mentioned to a member "Schwood" how exciting it was to see a Teddy Bruschi card. My knowledge of Teddy Bruschi was that he, was a ESPN sports announcer. It was not until a few years later that I realized that the above mentioned job was Mr. Bruschi's current occupation and I failed to comprehend that he was a member of the Superbowl Champion New England Patriots. We all know of his attributes, I don't need to go in that direction here!
So here I am, with Schwood asking if I wanted a Bruschi card. Of course my answer was a resounding "YES". Then it hit me, this is a trade! What am I trading with? Note, that my collecting of football cards only started in 2012 of December, my collection is minimal compared to what I've seen on this forum. Asking Schwood what he collected, I could only fulfill one small aspect of his collection, "Patriots" football cards. I looked at what I had, and thought; "I better apologize and let Schwood know that I could not fulfill his request"! He asked for what I had, I gave him a very small list of Patriots cards, and lo and behold Schwood did not have a 2012 Panini Contenders RC Chandler Jones die cut and a Deion Branch of the same series. I had completely forgotten about these cards! A trade was made, I would send him the cards mentioned and he would send me some cards (In my reply, I told Schwood; anything would be joyously received). I asked him to walk me through the entire process, it was extremely simple and straight forward. Everyone on this forum whom had a hand in setting this up, are to be commended! The idea of spending a fortune on the secondary market to obtain what you need became an afterthought. In essence, the word "Trading Card" made more sense to me now than it did in the past. The simplest things in life can be the most cherished.
With the ever changing dichotomy of the issues we have in the world and all of the complex problems that occur, it's a blessing to have something so simple that two people with the same interests can make a connection with a few pieces of colored cardboard! Its not always the "SUPERFRACTORUBERXPRISMCHROMEABLINGBLONG" card that we all search for that makes our day, (It is nice to get a hit of one) but the simplest item can be a start of a long and properous relationship, but to live life to its fullest is the true meaning of life.
