To my fellow forum members,
Father's Day, Mother's Day, whatever day. As adults, it is truly just another day. Do not misinterpret my words, it is not just another day to say so, but everyday, if we as adults can get up, it is a good day.
When my children were young it was fascinating to see what goes through the mind of a child and see things in their perspective. With further contemplation, they are like water, reflecting a mirror image of yourself. The scurrying on those special occasions whether for themselves or for mom and dad. Yes, yes, most times it is all about them.
I have always gave my children the affirmation; "To do what you don't like to do first, then you get to do what you want to do"! This followed by self discipline is really the key to life. My children went about growing up. Once a teen, things turn to a whole new direction. The water that reflected a mirror image of yourself now has disappeared overnight. What remains is their own reflection. I told my children; "Don't forget what happened to the beautiful young individual whom was so enamored of himself that his reflection in the water became his ultimate downfall". How Narcissistic can one be. Truth be told, my words earlier, reflection is not what they do nor do they follow my affirmation of to do what you don't want to do. Instead, it is quite the opposite, they do what they want to do without any reflection and contemplation in what will or can occur.
During this time in my children's lives, I was lucky to even be considered alive let alone receive a single murmur of a Happy Father's Day. This was all good for me. Why? Because first and foremost, I did whatever I disliked first only to look forward to what's ahead. Just remember, we were all teens at one time or another.
The biggest change came in the form of my children moving out! WOW! Mrs. Toshi and I had two extra empty rooms. Well, one became our guest room and the other? Mrs. Toshi's computer room and for the very first time in my life, my own desk with a work space for my beloved football cards. I wouldn't have to work on my cards on the dinning table anymore. Storing my collectibles in neat stacks on a metro rack became a reality.
To back up a little, last Father's Day, I am sure every forum member recalls that Mrs. Toshi purchased a 2012 Panini Black and Momentum hobby box. I was elated. This year, to my chagrin, my children decided to pool their funds together to get me a VIP ticket to the National Card show that will be here in Cleveland in August. I was not pleased with this gift. Let me explain, my children are now on their own. All bills, all issues, and all concerns are owned by them, I am not responsible for these necessities. Hence they understood what I have been trying to teach them all their lives; "With discipline, you will complete all things that you truly do not want to do first, then you can do what you want to do".
I emphasized that they needed the money, I am not going to take that kind of money out of my children's pockets. In the end, we all understood the true meaning of; "It's the thought that counts"! This is really the way to honor the one person whom helped raise you. Ultimately we all came to an agreement, I was to find a card via eBay and they would pay for it. When my children become Uber successful, and I mean when, not if, they can purchase a original 1911 T-206 Honus Wagner for me, until then, I picked out a 1991 Wild Card 5 Stripe Brett Favre Rookie Card for $20.00. Book value? $40.00. I already own the 10 stripe so this was a fantastic compliment to completing my Brett Favre rookie card set. Yes, like last year, I was elated! In the end, everything finds a way to work itself out. I am a witness to this. To conclude, If I may quote Coach Mike Ditka;
"Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today's a gift, that's why it's called the present"!
Toshi
P.S. I will admit, this set is the most ungliest god awful colored cards of Favre. It looks like a really bad acid trip! For Favre fanatics like me, the Wild Card set is not only the most difficult to find on the secondary market, they are the most costly cards second only to the 1991 Stadium Club Super Bowl Brett Favre card. These cars are the pinnacle in Favre's rookie cards. The other cards missing are cost prehibitive for me. 20, 50, 100, and 1000 Stripe cards can be in excess of $1,500.00 for all 4. Can anyone say Mega Million? I sure can and will!
