  • Pittsburgh Hockey Auction Does Six Figures

Hockey fans and collectors swooped in on the recent auction of memorabilia from the Civic Center in Pittsburgh, former home of the Penguins.** Over 900 bidders participated in an auction for signs, pictures and just about anything else that wasn’t nailed down.

The online event raised over $100,000.* Over 500 items were offered by AssetNation, Inc., which was put in charge of the sale.

Proceeds were split with some going to charity and some toward the effort of tearing the arena known as “The Igloo” down.* It had been the team’s home since the 1960s until a new arena was built recently.

The auction raised about $40,000 more than anticipated according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Signs seemed to be a big seller.* Top bid went to a “hockey operations” sign that measured about 20×20″.* It sold for $2,000.* A “Penguins Locker Room” sign went for $1750.

A second auction is planned for mid-January and will offer seats and lockers from the arena autographed by current and former Penguins.

Seats are currently being sold for $495 a pair.
