  • Mike Ilitch "I want to be in a position to make one or two additions"

What's next Detroit Tigers' Dave Dombrowski? GM expected to have a few options | MLive.com

"I haven’t totally zeroed in on our payroll yet," Ilitch said to the Detroit News in a rare interview. "What I’m still trying to figure out is what we need for next year. I want to be in a position to make one or two additions, and generally, they’re pretty big additions."

Question: "So you could add a couple of big-time players?"

Ilitch: "Yes. I’m already thinking about that. Can you imagine another big bat in our lineup?"

Pretty exciting to hear as a fan, since the team has been focusing on not raising payroll the last 3 years. Makes me hopeful this offseason. Hopefully they look at pitching more so than hitting though, hitting wasn't the issue this season.

So it'll go up to $54 mil instead of $50 mil?

          That was tongue in cheek.

Look, Ive been a Cleveland fan my entire life. This current owner is not going to spend what it will take to become an instant contender. Our best hope is that the young guys step up and mature very, very quickly. Then, if we are lucky enough to contend the "Players" that have stepped up will be at the end of their contracts and will be quickly be dealt to other teams for prospects only to start all over again. We've seen it done before.

Our payroll will be higher because Jiminez will come out of our pockets next year. So will the payraises due to Hafner, Sizemore, Asdrubal among others.

Congrats to the Tigers fans for having brass that will step up to compete.
