  • Phillies Decline Options On Oswalt & Lidge

I can see the Phillies declining their options to resign them at a lower salary. I know both Oswalt and Lidge have had injury problems in the past, but I would think they dont want to break up their 4 ace staff by letting Oswalt leave.

    From Yahoo Sports

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—The Phillies have declined the 2012 options for pitchers Roy Oswalt(notes) and Brad Lidge(notes).

Oswalt gets a $2 million buyout instead of $16 million next season. Lidge receives a $1.5 million buyout instead of $12.5 million next year.

Oswalt was 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA in 23 starts for the Phillies this past season. The three-time All-Star right-hander was acquired in a trade with Houston on July 29, 2010. He was 16-11 with a 2.96 ERA in 35 starts for Philadelphia.

Lidge went 0-2 with one save and a 1.40 ERA in 25 appearances for the Phillies in 2011. In four seasons with Philadelphia, Lidge was 3-11 with 100 saves and a 3.73 ERA. He was 1-1 with 12 saves in 12 opportunities and a 1.77 ERA in the postseason.

Lidge was 48 for 48 in save chances, including postseason, in helping the Phillies win the 2008 World Series.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the team will consider re-signing both players. The five-time defending NL East champions lost to St. Louis in five games in the division round.

Phillies don't really need Oswalt, assuming Worley didn't have a fluke year. I'm sure Oswalt will get decent money though.

Maybe the Indians will offer Oswalt 1 million and a bag of peanuts. This being the (extra) money management has promissed to spend. LOL
I collect a little bit of everything. But, if I never get back to you, your probably on Ignore!!

I love the Phillies and appreciate what Amaro did in getting Oswalt last year, but he is no longer an ACE. The Phillies did not have 4 aces. They had 2 aces and 1 number 2 starter. Oswalt is average at best now and not worth the money. Hopefully the Phillies will learn from the Braves in the late 90's. You have got to let people go when they are done.
Favorite baseball players include: Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Kirby Puckett, Pete Rose, Tyler Colvin Mark Appel
