  • Winning the Gio or Latos trade

It is always to see people debate who won the trade at this point. I've looked at extremes like the Colon for Phillips, Sizemore, Lee as a definite prospects winner. Then you look at what the Marlins got for Cabrera - essentially nothing now. Let's look at some recent A's trades:

A's trade Mulder and get Dan Haren - good for A's but...

They trade Haren for Car-go and Anderson - good for A's but...

They trade Car-go for Holliday - good for A's but...

    They trade Holiday for Wallace...

    Wallace traded away...

How long until Anderson is traded???

So, did the A's win? Have they won any of these trades??

They win most of their deals it seems in the short term but they of course trade everyone away. If Anderson can stay healthy for a season the A's could trade him for a great package i'm sure (probably similar to the Gio Gonzalez deal)

The A's problem is they want to relocate to San Jose because they aren't making money in Oakland so they keep rebuilding hoping they will eventually be able to leave Oakland and can have a young team to move into a stadium with.

Prospect trades are a complete crapshoot. I remember when the Indians traded Bartolo, the fans were calling for Shapiro's head because he gave up a Cy Young Winner for Lee Stevens and '3 minor leaguers'....and looking back now, that was probably the best trade the Indians have ever made in their history. (Although getting Carlos Santana for Casey Blake is up there lulz)

Yep. I mean, your team also gave up CC Sabathia for Matt LaPorta and a PTBNL who is actually better than LaPorta

LaPorta was supposed to be a 'can't miss' prospect. I remember when that trade was being discussed, Brewers fans hated it because LaPorta was supposed to be just like Ryan Braun.

The Tigers also turned down a trade with the Blue Jays for Roy Halladay before they traded him to Philly. They wanted Porcello, Ryan Perry and Casey Crosby. Porcello has no out pitch for leftys, Perry stinks and got traded for some scrub and Crosby is having fun with the Seawolves being average

The Tigers should know by now most their prospects end up being bad and trading them (except in the Edgar Renteria deal) ends up working out better

Halladay/Verlander would easily have been the sickest 1-2 punch in baseball....THANK GOD that trade didn't happen lol

Who was the player to be named later in this deal?

Some GM's fall in love with their prospects while other teams realize that prospects are players who just haven't done anything yet.

You are 100% correct. Happens all the time. Heck it's happening right now with many teams.
