  • Tigers Hire Brad Ausmus As Manager

    Y! SPORTS

The Detroit Tigers are set to name Brad Ausmus as their new manager, according to multiple reports late Saturday.

Ausmus is traveling to Detroit on Sunday to complete the deal to replace Jim Leyland, who retired after the Tigers were defeated by the Boston Red Sox in the American League Championship Series.

The 44-year-old former catcher played in the major leagues for 18 years but has no managerial experience other than with Team Israel in the qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic earlier this year.

Since Ausmus retired as a player in 2010, he has worked as a special assistant for the San Diego Padres.

Ausmus' playing career included three years with the Tigers. The defensive-minded catcher won Gold Gloves in 2001, 2002 and 2006. He also made the all-star team in 1999.

Others candidates who interviewed for the Tigers' opening were hitting coach Lloyd McClendon, Padres bench coach Rick Renteria and Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski confirmed that Ausmus interviewed for the job last Monday.

Ausmus also was thought to be a candidate for the vacant manager's job with the Chicago Cubs.
