  • Yankees Trade Chase Headley To Padres

Yankees unload Chase Headley, who is owed $13M in 2018

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. --- The New York Yankees continued their active winter by trading Chase Headley and his $13 million salary to the San Diego Padres, it was announced Tuesday.

The Yankees sent Headley, reliever Bryan Mitchell and $500,000 in cash to the Padres in exchange for Jabari Blash, a 28-year-old outfielder who has hit .200 in 99 career games.

By trading Headley, the Yankees gain $13 million in salary relief for next season, according to ESPN Stats & Information. The deal puts their projected payroll in the $170 million range, $27 million below the luxury-tax threshold of $197 million.

Headley, 33, batted .273 with 12 homers and 61 RBIs in 147 games last season. When the Yankees acquired Frazier in July, Headley moved from third to first base and became one of the team's hottest hitters during the stretch run.

After being traded to the Yankees in 2014, Headley returns to the Padres, with whom he hit a career-high 31 homers and led the NL with 115 RBIs in 2012.

He receives a $1 million assignment bonus for getting traded. His deal calls for $250,000 bonuses each for 475, 500, 525 and 550 plate appearances. The Yankees must make their $500,000 payment to the Padres by Jan. 10.

"I talked to Chase this morning and explained to him that we're going to look at the situation and figure out is there space for everybody? Is their opportunity for everybody?'' Padres general manager A.J. Preller said. "I was very honest, telling him that we're going to talk to other clubs, as well.''

The Yankees have long thought Mitchell could accomplish big things, but he never fully panned out in pinstripes. The 26-year-old righty was 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 32⅔ innings last year.

Blash, 28, hit .213 with five homers and 16 RBIs in 61 games.
