  • Diamondbacks Sign Alex Avila To 2 Years $8.25 Million

D-backs agree to deal with C Avila

Catcher Alex Avila, who played for three teams over the past two seasons, is headed to yet another club.

The veteran free agent, who turned 31 on Monday, agreed to a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

Avila spent his first seven major league seasons with the Tigers, earning an All-Star Game appearance in 2011 and helping Detroit reach the World Series in 2012.

He signed with the Chicago White Sox as a free agent for the 2016 season, but he wound up back with the Tigers for the beginning of the 2017 season. Detroit traded him and reliever Justin Wilson to the Chicago Cubs on July 31 in exchange for infielder Jeimer Candelario and minor league shortstop Isaac Paredes.

In 112 games overall last season, Avila batted .264 (his highest average in six years) with a .387 on-base percentage, a .447 slugging percentage, 14 homers and 49 RBIs.

For his career, Avila has a .243/.351/.401 batting line with 87 homers and 342 RBIs in 852 games.
