  • Carlos Correa Wins American League Rookie of the Year

Carlos Correa of Houston Astros named American League Rookie of the Year

Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa was named the American League Rookie of the Year on Monday.

Correa received 17 first-place votes and 13 second-place votes for 124 points. Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor was second with 13 firsts, 14 seconds and two thirds for 109 points, and Minnesota Twins designated hitter Miguel Sano was third with 20 points.

Houston was one of the biggest surprises in baseball this season, and Correa played a large part in the Astros making the postseason for the first time since 2005.

The 2012 No. 1 overall pick made his debut June 8 and hit .279 with 22 homers (tops among AL rookies), 68 RBIs and 14 steals. The youngest position player in the major leagues, he turned 21 in September.

He becomes just the second Astro in team history to be named rookie of the year and the first to win the AL award, as Jeff Bagwell was named the top rookie in the National League in 1991.

Correa had the $507,500 minimum salary in the majors. Houston gave Correa his debut after making sure he won't be arbitration eligible until following the 2018 season.
