Blue Jays nab SP Francisco Liriano from Pirates
The Toronto Blue Jays made a move Monday to bolster their rotation by acquiring starting pitcher Francisco Liriano from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
According to multiple reports, Toronto will receive Liriano and two prospects for starting pitcher Drew Hutchinson.
Liriano, 32, who is scheduled to make $13 million this season and next season, has struggled this year. He is 6-11 with a 5.46 ERA and 116 strikeouts, but he had a sub-3.40 ERA in each of his first three seasons with the Pirates before this season.
The Blue Jays have mentioned placing talented starter Aaron Sanchez in the bullpen at some point this season to help protect his pitch count. The addition of Liriano allows them to do that.
Liriano is 94-90 with a 4.09 ERA in his career. He can be a quality No. 3 starter when in form.
