Wayne Ellington Reportedly Agrees to 1-Year Contract with Heat
Shooting guard Wayne Ellington is coming off a career-best scoring season, and the Miami Heat rewarded him with a new one-year, $6.2 million contract Thursday, according to ESPN.com's Chris Haynes.
Ellington was a first-round pick in 2008 but has been a journeyman. He played with the Minnesota Timberwolves during his first three seasons and then laced up for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Memphis Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets and Miami between 2012 and 2018.
He's always been able to stretch opposing defenses with his perimeter shooting, and he drilled 39.2 percent of his three-pointers last season by taking advantage of situations when Goran Dragic and others drew additional defensive attention.
As a result, Ellington averaged a career-high 11.2 points per game and helped lead Miami to the playoffs, where it lost in the first round to the Philadelphia 76ers.
It was the third time in Ellington's career he averaged double-digit scoring figures, although two of those efforts have come in the last two seasons. In addition, he proved to teams he is a capable offensive contributor who can hit open looks.
Ellington will be 31 years old during the 2018-19 campaign, but there is nothing to suggest he won't continue serving as a lethal three-point shooter who provides an offensive spark from the wing.
