  • Magic Fire Head Coach Jacque Vaughn

Orlando Magic fire head coach Jacque Vaughn - ESPN

The Orlando Magic have fired head coach Jacque Vaughn, general manager Rob Hennigan announced Thursday.

Vaughn, 39, was in his third year as Orlando's coach and had a 58-158 record. A former Spurs assistant coach under Gregg Popovich, Vaughn was hired to guide the Magic in their post-Dwight Howard era.

"Jacque has been a trusted friend and colleague," Hennigan said. "We thank him immensely for his contributions and sacrifices in bringing our team to this point, and we greatly appreciate his unwavering commitment to our organization. We have tremendous respect for Jacque and certainly wish him the best as he embarks on the next phase of his career."

Vaughn, in a separate release, thanked Magic owner Rich DeVos and the DeVos family.

"I am a stronger and wiser man and coach because of the opportunity," Vaughn said in the statement. "I look forward to seeing this group continue to grow."

Hennigan said assistant coach James Borrego has been named the interim coach. The team is set to hold a news conference Thursday afternoon.

The Magic dropped their 10th straight game -- and have lost 16 of their past 18 games -- with a 110-103 loss at San Antonio on Wednesday.

The most recent losing streak has included perplexing losses to some of the NBA's worst clubs in Detroit, Charlotte, New York and the L.A. Lakers.

Despite being as healthy has the Magic have been all season, the Magic have given up 100 or more points in 14 consecutive games. They've also lost five of their past six at home, where they are just 5-17 this season.

With the club essentially starting over, Orlando was patient with Vaughn while the Magic went 43-121 over his first two seasons. But as the club has improved its roster this season, the results didn't match expectations -- and the Magic have the same 15-37 record as they had through 52 games in the 2013-14 season.

The Magic's .269 win percentage over the past three seasons under Vaughn is the worst in the NBA during that span, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Vaughn's win percentage also is the worst among Magic coaches and the second-worst in NBA history among coaches with at least 200 games. Only Sidney Lowe, who coached parts of two seasons with the Timberwolves and three seasons with the Grizzlies, has a worse win percentage.

Vaughn, who also played for the Magic during his 12-year career as a point guard, pointed toward the team's lack of chemistry as a reason for the team coming up short in Wednesday's loss to the Spurs.

They have some talent in Oladipo, Peyton, Vucevic, and Aaron Gordon. Tobias is gone after this season. They should not have Frye or Ben Gordon though.

It could be worse, they could be coaching the 76ers or Knicks. LOL!
