Per Real GM.
Jameer Nelson has agreed in principle on a new three-year contract to re-sign with the Denver Nuggets, league sources told RealGM.
Nelson opted out of his $2.8 million option for next season to become a free agent, but remained in strong discussions with the Nuggets. Several contenders also expressed interest in the veteran guard.
Nelson and the Nuggets have an agreement in place, but both sides are still finalizing paperwork, sources said.
Nuggets coach Mike Malone said on Sunday that the team would be bringing back Nelson as a free agent, a deal that executives around the NBA learned was progressing over the weekend. Denver has also signed Wilson Chandler to a long-term extension that many within the league believe is a tremendous value for the franchise before the 2016 salary cap spike.
After signing Nelson last summer, the Dallas Mavericks started the season 19-8,a concise offensive system with him at point guard. Still, they traded the 33-year-old in mid-December. Dallas’ front office had hoped Rajon Rondo would elevate the team, but the partnership ended in a first-round series loss and a split in July.
Nelson joining the Nuggets in January via trade from Boston, scored 9.6 points and 3.7 assists per game in Denver. Nelson has averaged 12.2 points, 5.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds over his 11-year career, 10 of which with the Orlando Magic.
