Report: Raptors to waive Anthony Bennett, sign Jason Thompson - CBSSports.com

The Toronto Raptors will waive forward Anthony Bennett in order to sign forward Jason Thompson, according to The Vertical's Shams Charania. Thompson was waived by the Golden State Warriors a week ago in order to clear a roster spot for Anderson Varejao.

Thompson, 29, has had a whirlwind of a year. He spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Sacramento Kings, then was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers last summer. Before playing a game for the Sixers, they traded him to the defending champion Golden State Warriors. He didn't get much playing time, though, and ended up getting cut loose when the front office had an opportunity to sign a defensive center.

In Thompson, the Raptors will be adding a player who does not possess Bennett's power or leaping ability. He does, however, understand how to play team defense, and he should be a good fit. Given how Luis Scola has struggled recently, Thompson should at least get a chance to prove he should be a part of the rotation come playoff time. And since he spent seven seasons missing the playoffs with the Kings, he should be rather motivated.
