Jazz trade Trey Lyles, No. 24 pick to Nuggets to select Donovan Mitchell at No. 13

The Utah Jazz have traded forward Trey Lyles and the No. 24 pick in the 2017 NBA draft to the Denver Nuggets. In exchange, the Jazz receive the No. 13 pick to select Louisville guard Donovan Mitchell.

Mitchell, a 6’3” 20-year-old guard, said he was lost for words after the Jazz drafted him 13th on Thursday. He was visibly emotional, noting the Jazz were the first team to work him out as he navigated his post-collegiate career.

Mitchell was a standout sophomore guard under head coach Rick Pitino at Louisville, averaging 15.6 points and two steals per game. He helped lead the Cardinals to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and gives the Jazz a dynamic combo guard for the future.

It is unclear who the Nuggets will select at No. 24, but they acquired a versatile combo forward in Lyles, who could be a piece to build on as Denver moves forward
