  • Cam Newton Wins NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

Panthers QB Newton wins Offensive Rookie of Year - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has won the 2011 Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Newton is the second straight No. 1 overall draft pick to take the honor in voting by a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league. Rams QB Sam Bradford won it last year.

“I want to thank the man upstairs,” Newton said.

The first Panther to take the award, Newton received 47 votes to three for Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton. The awards were presented on the “NFL Honors” primetime special Saturday night on NBC.

Newton set an NFL record for touchdowns rushing in a season by a quarterback with 14 and became the first player in league history to throw for 4,000 yards and rush for 500. He helped Carolina improve from 2-14 to 6-10, throwing for 21 touchdowns.

No quarterback had won the award until Ben Roethlisberger in 2004. Since, Vince Young, Matt Ryan, Bradford and Newton have been chosen.

Yep no brainer. Newton won it simply off personal numbers. Dalton got his team to the playoffs but that was due to thier schedule.

FACT: The Bengals didn't beat 1 single team that made the playoffs. Loses included 2 Pittsburgh, 2 Ravens, 1 Denver, 1 Houston, 1 San Francisco. Wins 2 Browns, 1 Seattle, 1 Colts, 1 Rams, 1 Titans, 1 Bills, 1 Jaguars, 1 Arizona.

Year 2 for Dalton and Newton should more of a telling story than thier rookie year.

fantasy-wise, last year's surprises were vick and foster. this year was definitely newton. if you drafted him late or got him off free agency, you rode him right to the playoffs.

i think at about the half way point, it was neck and neck between him and dalton, but newton pulled it out at the end of the season. he deserves it.
