  • NFL fines Kyle Shanahan $25K for behavior toward officials Sunday

Three NFL coaches -- Kyle Shanahan, Bill Belichick and John Harbaugh -- got in hot water over the weekend for behavior toward referees during their respective NFL games. CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported on Tuesday night the NFL is close to announcing a decision for each.

And the first decision is in, as CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman reports that Shanahan was fined $25,000 for his behavior following the game.

Shanahan chased the officials into the tunnel following the Redskins loss to the Bengals (he was apparently incensed at the unsportsmanlike penalty he received near the end of the game) and reportedly said some NSFW things to the guys in stripes.

Considering that Shanny's act toward the refs involved physically pursuing them, it's somewhat surprising that he was fined the same amount as Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio (and less than Denver head coach John Fox) who was fined for his sideline antics.

On the other hand, it's possible that the NFL's fines will be related to the coach's position, and we'll see bigger fines for head coaches than assistants. We'll know once word of Belichick and Harbaugh's fines come out. In the meantime, Shanahan should be glad he escaped with a relatively minimal slap on the wrist.
