  • Congress to hold HGH hearings and NFL, union need to be careful

I'm normally not one to say Congress has better things to do than mess around with sports. Congressmen and women have, you know, staffers that allow officials to do multiple things. However, as the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform prepares to convene a hearing next week to dig into HGH testing in the NFL, well, doesn't Congress have better freaking things to do?

The news of the hearings was first reported by ESPN and after speaking to people on both sides Tuesday night who comfirmed there indeed will likely be HGH hearings next week, it's clear there is some trepidation about the hearings from both the union and NFL. That's because, as much as Congress did in fact help to clean up baseball using hearings, it is also capable of screwing things up.

The concern from both sides is that Congress will try to humiliate the union, the NFL or both, into getting an HGH agreement done. Although an HGH deal is definitely needed, a pressured, hurried deal could lead to a deal that doesn't serve either side or the sport well.

If both sides were smart they would, within the next few days, hammer out an agreement. Actually, if they were smart, they would hop into Roger Goodell's time machine and do it yesterday.

Because Congress won't be fooling around. It could get ugly very quickly for football. Subpoenas and testimony under oath aren't fun and could have repercussions. Ask Roger Clemens.

Remember, last year Congress beat up on the NFL and seemed to force an agreement between the NFL and union, but none actually came. So here we are again.

Again, HGH testing is important. The sport needs to be as clean as possible, which also relates to player safety since a level playing field won't lead to one player gaining a size and speed advantage and using it to smash others in the head.

Sure, Congress has the fiscal cliff to worry about, the country to run, terrorism to fight, budget deals to make, interns to grope, wars to end, and citizens to feed, but Congress has plenty of time to pummel the NFL, too.

    Right?
