  • Roger Goodell: No playoff expansion coming in 2013

PHOENIX -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made waves recently when he stated the NFL was considering playoff expansion by bumping the postseason to 14 or 16 teams.

On Monday at the 2013 NFL Owners Meetings, Goodell didn't shoot down the notion of expansion, but he did say that we wouldn't see any extra teams in 2013.

"The information when I met with the competition committee yesterday was helpful for us in our consideration," Goodell said. "We have a little work to do before we can answer [on expansion]. It clearly won't be happening this year, if there was any doubt about that."

Goodell said that he and the competition committee looked at some of the issues that would surround an expansion of the postseason and discussed those issues.

There's still plenty of items to hurdle, including discussions with the union, which Goodell said could happen "at some point in time."

"There are things that we'll now take and put into our own considerations and probably have some discussions with the union at some point in time to get their views on does this make sense," Goodell said.

The league also has to determine if expanding the playoffs actually makes sense. 2012 wasn't a great test case for it, however. Jumping to 16 teams would've put a 7-9 Chargers squad into the postseason and even simply going to 14 teams would've allowed an 8-8 Steelers team into the postseason (provided that the expansion would be a simple wild-card based addition anyway).

But more postseason games mean more televised games and more televised games mean more money. Hopefully additional cash won't come at the expense of high-quality football.
