Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and NBC Sunday Night Football play-by-play announcer Al Michaels was arrested on Friday night in Southern California for suspicion of driving under the influence.
Michaels, who is revered for his iconic "Do you believe in miracles?" call in the waning seconds of the U.S. hockey team's win over the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics, was arrested shortly before 10 p.m. on Friday evening, according to CNN. Michaels, 68, was charged with misdemeanor DUI and spent approximately five hours in the Santa Monica City Jail. The NBC sportscaster was released early Saturday morning on his own recognizance.
"He was evaluated for suspicion of DUI, brought to the station for a Breathalyzer test, and it came out .08, which was at the legal limit, so he was released on a citation at about 3 or 4 in the morning," Sgt. William Heric of the Santa Monica Police Department told Los Angeles' City News Service. "He was cooperative and polite the whole time."
Michaels' 20-year stint on Monday Night Football came to an end in 2006 when he left ABC Sports for NBC. Michaels is the only broadcaster to call the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals and host the Stanley Cup Finals for network television. He has also covered numerous Summer and Winter Olympics, the Triple Crown in horse racing and the Indianapolis 500 in his six decades in broadcasting.
In March, Michaels was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame. Michaels is scheduled to appear at Los Angeles Municipal Court on June 26.
