Vince Young has signed with the Green Bay Packers.
And not just to run the read-option for the scout team.
The former Tennessee Titans No. 3 overall pick has signed a one-year deal to compete as Aaron Rodgers' backup, a source told FOX Sports. The source immediately swatted down speculation that Young, who worked out for the team on Monday, was brought in merely to give a running look for the defense in the weeks leading up to the team's first two games against the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins.
The 30-year-old Young hasn't taken a snap in a regular-season game since he was a member of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011. Young was with the Buffalo Bills last offseason but was cut toward the end of camp.
Young will compete with Graham Harrell and perhaps B.J. Coleman as Rodgers' backup. His arrival may be bad news for both of those players, as it indicates the Packers believe there was a need for an upgrade.
Rodgers has been durable over his career but was sacked 51 times last season. The loss of left tackle Bryan Bulaga to a torn ACL this past weekend certainly won't help the protection in front of him in 2013.
