  • 2011 World Cup - Japan Comeback To Defeat USA

USA controlled the entire first half but couldn't put the ball into the net. Abby Wambach hit the cross bar with one of her shots and everyone knew one was going in sooner or later. The game was tied 0-0 at the half and I just had a feeling about Alex Morgan scoring in the 2nd half.

Alex Morgan rewarded my prediction with a goal in the 69th minute but it wasn't the game winning one. Japan came back in the 80th minute with the equalizer. It was a sloppy play by the USA defenders. They weren't able to clear the ball out of the box.

The game went into extra time, which is appropriate for the World Cup Finals.

In the 104th minute, Alex Morgan crossed the ball into the middle of the box. Abby Wambach was there for the header, just like the rest of her 2011 World Cup goals. In the 116th minute, Japan came back with another equalizer and sent the game into penalty kicks.

Remember Brandi Chastain's PK game winner?

It wasn't a repeat of the 1999 shootout. USA missed their first 3 penalty kicks and Japan made 3 of their 4 shots.

Japan win the World Cup for the first time ever.
