  • thinking about sending some letters

I used to send ttms all the time as a child. I had some success back then with it. Even got Dan Marino and Grant Hill to respond. I'm thinking about doing it with my children as I'm slowly converting them to the hobby. Was hoping someone has had success and could maybe share their story with me. Things like good targets that will write back, what's ideal to send and how long the wait time is. Any advice is appreciated as I'm a newbie to the new scene. Thanks in advanced.

I usually like to send out right now to Major League players at their Spring Training Facility. We've had moderate success. I always send a SASE and a couple cards to sign. I also send out a letter to all the Major league teams requesting a fan kit and those usually come back with stickers and Player photos. I also send a SASE to them also which some use or others just put your envelope into a bigger envelope. I always have my kids write down the players name and the date sent and that way we can track how long it takes to get something back. I know when I was younger I sent one to Mike Schmidt and it actually came back with a hand written letter, two years later. Let us know how it goes!!!

I've done the same thing with my boys. The best returners are 70's and 80's players who, unfortunately, aren't as well known by your kids. I have found Billy Sample is a great person who will write to your kids, too. Many of the guys who are very dedicated to their faith like Frank Tanana and Doug Jones love responding to kids. Current guys are a little tough due to their commitments. Pat Neshek is awesome for the current guys. He will return your cards and if you send him some of your extras of other players that were signed, he will give you more of his. He is an autograph collector, too.
