I'm a little new to collecting sports cards so I have a few questions.
    1) what do the number on the cards mean? Is it better to have a higher number card or lower number card?
    2) how do box breaks work?
    Thank you
    John

Which numbers? The card number ( example: 625) refers to what card number it is in the set. if there are 800 cards in that set, then that particular card is #625. If you're referring to a stamped serial number (example: 5/25 ), then that would indicate that of that particular card there were 25 printed and each received a serial # from 1-25.

As far as box breaks go, it can be for any number of boxes or even cases, and usually you purchase your team in advance. Some breakers sell the teams for different amounts, usually based on what hits could come from those particular teams. For example; this year the Dodgers (Puig) would probably sell higher than the Cubs. Most breakers will record the break and usually ship the base cards to you as well.
