First, because I realize not everyone knows about this product, here is a link to the product website: Prospect Rush
Ok, so I buy into group breaks pretty frequently and I've had a lot of success lately, hit some pretty great cards really. When I heard about Prospect Rush, and saw the price tag, I knew that for me to get in on it, it would have to be through a group break as I have never had $2800 dollars to throw at a box of cards lol. That being said, my favorite breaker announced they would be breaking a few boxes of Prospect Rush. The spots were a bit pricy (11 spots, $250 per spot, snake draft, 22 hits per box). I got drawn into the chase, as there are some really big hits in this product, and a shot at the 2013 Draft Bryant Superfractor. Either way, I figured for $250, I'm guaranteed two hits, one of which will be graded, what the hell I like my odds.
The box broke last night. Each box contains 22 hits (23 in some boxes): 10 Graded Cards, 10 cards in toploaders, and some unopened packs from all years of Bowman Draft. There are chase cards in this product, for sure, but most of the hits are from 2014 Bowman Draft. So the toploader cards in this box weren't horrible, there was a Bryant Blue Refractor non auto and a 1/1 Sketch Card of Tyler Kolek as well as an instant win scratch off that ended up being a pretty decent hit: a redemption for a random slabbed auto plus 10 graded Kris Bryant Paper RCs from Draft. Then on to the graded hits, what everyone is there for. This box had about five graded nonauto refractors: Orange, Green, and one of the better cards of the box, a Bowman is Back Red Refractor nonauto of Austin Meadows BGS 9.5. There were five graded autos all graded 9.5/10 except for one. The slabbed autos were a refractor auto of Braden Shipley, and there were three base autos from 2014 Draft, can't remember the names. The tenth and final hit was a base auto. Graded 9 with a 10 auto. I'll get to that in a moment.
The way a snake draft works, for those unfamiliar, is relatively simple. You have the names of the spot holders, people that filled the break. Those names go on a list, the breaker rolls the dice and using random.com, randomizes the list based on the number on the dice. So, there were 11 spots in this break. My name was at the top of the list. The breaker rolled an eight, so the list would be randomized eight times, and this determines the draft order. So really, unless you get lucky in the randomizer and end up in the top three, the pickings are slim. Either way, I liked my odds, if I didn't end up in the top three, I'm still leaving with two hits, and I haven't lost a ton of money. So this is a bit wordy for me, I realize my posts here aren't normally this in depth, but I felt like this hit deserved a few words. I mentioned earlier that the tenth hit was a BGS 9. That's really not a grade you want to see, it's better than an 8.5, sure, but it's not a 9.5. It was a 9/10, meaning the card graded at 9 and the auto was a 10. So, it's a 9 in terms of centering, surface, corners etc. At least the auto graded well.
I would have been more than happy to get spot 2 or three in the draft order. As the randomizer was doing it's thing, I figured if I can just get a shot at the Red Meadows mentioned above, I'll be happy, that would be a great add to the PC. Hell, even in the four or five spot, there are some decent cards, there's a Red Ice Conforto, the Shipley Auto wouldn't be bad to have. Neither of those are huge items, but my whole goal was to have fun and snag a graded prospect auto. So my name started on the top of the list and as the randomizer is going, I watch my name bouncing through the order, by the 5th random, I'm back on top of the list, but thinking there is no way I end up there again at the end. I was wrong. The eight random, and I about passed out. There it was, my name at the top of the list. I have the first pick in this hit draft. Unbelievable. My choice was easy, I didn't hesitate. Also, I didn't pick the Meadows, it was tempting, but this choice was an absolute no brainer. Why all these words? What's the big deal? Well, the big deal is the biggest card I have ever hit. The breaker went through all the hits first before determining draft order, which I thought was cool, instead of knowing where you are picking before the hits roll out. This was pretty exciting stuff. Why would I pass on a graded, low numbered refractor of Austin Meadows, someone that I PC? Because of this base auto, with a BGS grade of 9, 10 auto (please forgive the blurry screenshot):
