Every summer, basketball card collectors such as myself spend a lot of time trying to figure out which rookies to buy. While the upcoming rookie class doesn't appear to be anything spectacular, there is one player who really stands out to me, and his name is Jimmer. Jimmer Fredette. Many people are still unsold on whether or not he will be able to perform well in the NBA. I will be collecting Jimmer because of his lights out shooting ability, his craftiness around the basket, and his staggering desire to succeed.
In his senior year at Brigham Young University, Jimmer is averaging 25.8 points/game, which leads the NCAA. The majority of his points come from beyond the arc. This guy will jack it up often, and from anywhere on the floor, yet he still is able to shoot an impressive 40% from three point land. During his junior season, Jimmer drilled nine threes in a win over Arizona, a game in which he tallied a career high 49 points. Can you really go wrong with a shooter that is this good?
Although Jimmer scores a lot of points via the three ball, his repertoire is not limited to threes. He uses his strength to beat defenders off the dribble, then puts it in the hole. You certainly won't see him throw it down over Yao Ming, but Fredette is one of the craftiest players around the goal that I have ever seen. I would compare his unbelievable layups and floaters to those of Steve Nash. I could actually see Jimmer becoming a Nash type player some day, only I think he will be a better scorer than Nash.
My final reason for this Jimmer enthusiasm, is his drive to be successful. He is constantly faced with the challenge of facing a defender with superior speed, yet he still leads all of college basketball in scoring. When you think college basketball, BYU is not the first school that comes to mind, actually, it's probably not even one of the first hundred schools that comes to mind. Even so, Jimmer has BYU sitting at #9 in the country with an 18-1 record. In fact, BYU has been 100-21 with Jimmer Fredette on its roster. The man is a winner.
I believe due to his shooting skills, cleverness, and desire, Jimmer Fredette will be well worth collecting when the upcoming rookie class's cards are released.
