I want to thanks Topps for allowing LA Inspiration to review Platinum Football.
What I liked about the product?
Just like their baseball product, Topps uses a nice mixture of players from rookies to veterans. Each pack contains at least one rookie card. Each of the rookie autographs are On-Card, which is always a plus. I like the Veteran Base Ruby Parallel that are thicker than the regular base.
What I didn't like about the product?
The sticker autos on the patch relics need to go. I know it's easier to produce the product without having to put any redemptions. There's too many rookies in the product, cutting down the number of rookies from 50 to 35 would make the product a little better. There are some players that not every collector know about.
CHECKLIST:
The 2012 Topps Platinum Football base set consists of 150 cards. The first 100 cards are veterans. The 50 rookie cards are all Chrome Refractors. It includes big name rookies like Andrew Luck, RGIII and Trent Richardson. It's not a difficult set to collect which would make it more desirable for set collectors. Each box guarantees 2 on-card rookie autographs and an autograph patch relic card.
DESIGN:
Each card is printed on rainbow foil card stock which give it a nice look. The design of this years Platinum is slightly better than 2011. I like the fact that each team's logo is on the front of the card with it's own border surrounding it. The X-Fractors are noticeable because some rookie cards have a different pattern in the background. There's also one black refractor per box and Topps make it stand out with the change of color in the background. The die-cuts look amazing and unique with the football design at the top of the card.
FUN FACTOR:
Each rookie autograph has seven different numbered parallels. Platinum is a product that is exciting to try to complete not only the base set but even the autograph rookie set. Parallels always make a product more intriguing. There are a lot of big time pulls from this product especially for collectors who enjoy rookies.
VALUE:
The chance to pull some of the big name rookies like Andrew Luck and RGIII will always make this a hot product even if the cards are sticker autos. The patch autographs not only include rookies but there's a possibility of pulling some veterans. Topps also included Dual Autographs, Triple Autographs and even double-sided Hexagraphs.
FINAL RATINGS:
Checklist 4.3/5
Design 4.8/5
Fun 5/5
Value 4.5/5
Total: 18.6/20
Be on the look out for a NFL contest. I'll be giving away a couple of cards that were pulled from this box.
